Abstract

We propose a scheme to efficiently generate time-frequency and polarization-entangled photon pairs with cold atomic ensembles via spontaneous four-wave mixing through combining the photon pairs from two symmetrical spatial modes by polarization beam splitters. With a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap, polarization-entangled photon pairs with controllable temporal length (>100 ns) can be generated at the rate of about 105 per second after taking into account all losses. Therefore, it is a feasible photon source for scalable linear optical quantum computation and long-distance quantum communication.

Direct Generation of Narrow-band Hyperentangled Photons

Tianming Zhao, Yong Sup Ihn, Yoon-Ho Kim

In quantum communication and photonic quantum information processing, the requirement of quantum repeaters and quantum memory often imposes a strict bandwidth prerequisite for the entangled photons. At the same time, there is ever more increasing demand for entangling more degrees of freedom, i.e., hyperentanglement, for a photon pair. In this Letter, we report the direct generation of narrow-band orbital angular momentum (OAM) and polarization hyperentangled photons from cold atoms. The narrow-band photon pair is naturally entangled in polarization and OAM, in addition to time-frequency, degrees of freedom due to spin and orbital angular momentum conservation conditions in the spontaneous four-wave mixing process in a cold atom ensemble. The narrow-band hyperentangled photon pair source reported here is expected to play important roles in quantum memory-based long-distance quantum communication.

Photon pairs with coherence time exceeding 1 μs

Luwei Zhao, Xianxin Guo, Chang Liu +3 more

The generation of nonclassical photon pairs with a long coherence time is key for applications that range from fundamental to quantum communication and metrology. Spontaneous four-wave mixing with electromagnetically induced transparency has been demonstrated as one of the most efficient methods; however, narrowing the bandwidth and producing photon pairs with a temporal length beyond 1 μs remains a technical challenge due to noise considerations and the need for cold atoms with a high optical depth (OD). In this work, we demonstrate the generation of narrowband photon pairs with a controllable coherence time up to 1.72 μs in a laser-cooled atomic ensemble with an OD as high as 130. At such a high OD, we find that the pump laser field spatial profile has a significant effect on the time–frequency entangled two-photon waveform. We also confirm the quantum particle nature of heralded narrowband single photons generated from this source.

Narrow-band entangled photon pairs could not only provide powerful tools to test some basic concepts of quantum mechanics,e.g.,nonlocal property, but also be used to improve long-distance quantum communication and scalable distributed linear optical quantum computation. The authors reviewed the experimental aspects of the generation and modulation of such kind of narrow-band entangled photon pairs in cold atoms through spontaneous four wave mixing and electromagnetic induced transparency.

Subnatural-Linewidth Polarization-Entangled Photon Pairs with Controllable Temporal Length

Kai-Yu Liao, Hui Yan, J. He +3 more

We demonstrate an efficient experimental scheme for producing polarization-entangled photon pairs from spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a laser-cooled (85)Rb atomic ensemble, with a bandwidth (as low as 0.8 MHz) much narrower than the rubidium atomic natural linewidth. By stabilizing the relative phase between the two SFWM paths in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer configuration, we are able to produce all four Bell states. These subnatural-linewidth photon pairs with polarization entanglement are ideal quantum information carriers for connecting remote atomic quantum nodes via efficient light-matter interaction in a photon-atom quantum network.

Generation of Narrow-Band Hyperentangled Nondegenerate Paired Photons

Hui Yan, Shanchao Zhang, J. F. Chen +3 more

We report the generation of nondegenerate narrow-bandwidth paired photons with time-frequency and polarization entanglements from laser cooled atoms. We observe the two-photon interference caused by Rabi splitting with a coherence time of about 30 ns and a visibility of 81.8% which verifies the time-frequency entanglement of the paired photons. The polarization entanglement is confirmed by polarization correlation measurements which exhibit a visibility of 89.5% and characterized by quantum-state tomography with a fidelity of 90.8%. Taking into account the transmission losses and duty cycle, we estimate that the system generates hyperentangled paired photons into opposing single-mode fibers at a rate of 320 pairs per second.
