Abstract

A class of bound-state problems which represent the interaction between a system of N two-level atoms and an electromagnetic radiation via an m-photon process is studied, with m = 1; 2; 3;.... We also evaluate some nonlinear effects usually related with the polarisability of the medium and with the dependence on the intensity of the radiation field on the matter-radiation interaction. We obtain exact values for the eigenstates and eigenvalues for all values of total angular momentum of the system and all possible number m of photons involved in the interaction. We give explicit analytic expressions for small numbers of atoms and discuss some aspects of the composition of the eigenstates and of the spectra obtained in these cases.

Polarization effects in radiation interaction with multilevel quantum systems

Alexander A. Apolonski, K. A. Nasyrov, Anatolii M. Shalagin

In recent years interest has significantly quickened in investigation of nonlinear optical and spectroscopic phenomena in such unique objects as Rydberg atoms (the atoms in the energy states near the ionization limit) and van der Waals complexes (dimers). These objects are characterized, in particular, by that their energy states are strongly degenerate due to a large value of angular (rotational) momentum. Here, the problem arises of adequate theoretical description of experimental results, especially when polarization peculiarities of nonlinear radiation processes are considered. The problem is caused by the existence of a huge number of quantum magnetic sublevels of energy states, which are, in the general case, coherently coupled to each other and take part in the radiation processes. Figure 1 gives a vivid presentation of the problem arising even in such a seemingly simple case when one need describe the radiation transitions caused by a strong monochromatic field between two energy levels with large values of the angular momentum J. If the field polarization is arbitrary, the whole set of the magnetic sublevels turn out to be coupled by radiative transitions. Formally, the problem becomes essentially multilevel. In this case not only the hope fades of solving it analytically using the traditional quantum-mechanical approach, but the problems of numerical solution grow abruptly with increasing quantum number J as well. On the other hand, as is often the case, every cloud has a silver lining. With large J we approach the situation when the rotational motion of particles can be described classically. It turns out that the transition from the quantum description of orientation states of the angular momentum to the classical one simplifies the problem radically: it reduces to the problem of radiation processes in the simplest model of nondegenerate states. In this case the rotational motion manifests itself in a dependence of the density matrix elements on orientation angles of the angular momentum as on a parameter.

Exact eigenstates for a class of models describing two-mode multiphoton processes

Ying Wu, Xiaoxue Yang

We present an efficient approach to studying the spectra and eigenstates for nonlinear models describing multiphoton processes. We obtain the exact explicit analytical expressions of all the energy spectra and eigenstates in terms of a parameter for a class of models describing two-mode multiphoton processes. The parameter is shown to be determined by the roots of a simple polynomial.

Solution to Nonlinear Jaynes-Cummings Models with Nonlinearities of both Two-Mode Field and Atom-Field Interaction

Yu Wan‐Lun

We use the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant and superoperator methods to solve the system of the interaction of a two-level atom with two modes of a quantized field via multiphoton process, including any form of both intensity-dependent interaction and nonlinearity of the two-mode radiation field. The corresponding general atom-field wave function and time evolution operator as well as the time-evolving expressions for both the atomic inversion and the photon numbers of two modes field are evaluated.

A Treatment of the Absorption Spectrum for a Multiphoton 𠑉 -Type Three-Level Atom Interacting with a Squeezed Coherent Field in the Presence of Nonlinearities

F. K. Faramawy

We study the interaction of a three-level atom with a single mode field through multiphoton transition in a cavity, taking explicitly into account the existence of forms of nonlinearities of both the field and the intensity-dependent atom-field coupling. The analytical forms of the absorption spectrum is calculated using the dressed states of the system. The effects of photon multiplicities, mean photon number, detuning, Kerr-like medium, and the intensity-dependent coupling functional on the absorption spectrum are analyzed.

The general formalism for a three-level atom interacting with a two-mode cavity field

N. H. Abdel-Wahab

We study the interaction between a three-level atom and a two modes electromagnetic field. The atomic levels are coupled by the multiphotons transitions, the coupling constants between the field and atomic levels are considered to be intensity dependent and the Kerr medium is taken into account. We obtained the constants of motion and the wave function when the atom is given in an arbitrary initial state. We calculate a number of statistical aspects of a theoretically considered model.

Entropy of a general three-level atom interacting with a two mode

A.‐S. F. Obada, Sadek Ahmed Hanoura, A. A. Eied

A model of a three-level atom in the Λ-configuration interacting with a two-mode field under a multi-photon process is considered. The effects of the mean photon numbers, detuning, Kerr-like medium parameters and various forms of the intensity-dependent coupling functional are considered. Analytical expressions for the time unitary operator, the density operator and the final state of the system are analyzed via the framework of the dressed states. The atom is prepared in its upper excited state, and the fields are prepared in binomial states. The general conclusions reached are illustrated by numerical results displaying the effects of photon-number, detuning and nonlinearities of both the field and intensity-dependent atom–field couplings.
