Abstract

We present an experimental and theoretical characterization of the sym- metric four-qubit entangled Dicke state with two excitations D (2) . We investigate the state's violation of local realism and study its characteristic properties with re- spect to quantum information applications. For the experimental observation of the state we used photons obtained from parametric down conversion. This allowed, in a simple experimental set-up, quantum state tomography yielding a fidelity as high as 0.844 ± 0.008.

Experimental Observation of Four-Photon Entangled Dicke State with High Fidelity

We present the experimental observation of the symmetric four-photon entangled Dicke state with two excitations |D_{4};{(2)}. A simple experimental setup allowed quantum state tomography yielding a fidelity as high as 0.844+/-0.008. We study the entanglement persistency of the state using novel witness operators and focus on the demonstration of a remarkable property: depending on the orientation of a measurement on one photon, the remaining three photons are projected into both inequivalent classes of genuine tripartite entanglement, the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and W class. Furthermore, we discuss possible applications of |D_{4};{(2)} in quantum communication.

Experimental violation of the local realism for four-qubit Dicke state

Yuanyuan Zhao, Yu-Chun Wu, Guo‐Yong Xiang +2 more

Dicke state is an widely used type of multi-particle entangled state in quantum information. However, very few works have been done on its nonlocality. Here we prepare a four-photon symmetric Dicke state, whose fidelity is as high as 0.904 ± 0.004, and devise a simple Bell-type inequality to demonstrate that it violates the local realism with 12 standard deviation.

Experimental Entanglement of a Six-Photon Symmetric Dicke State

Witlef Wieczorek, Roland Krischek, Nikolai Kiesel +3 more

We report on the experimental observation and characterization of a six-photon entangled Dicke state. We obtain a fidelity as high as 0.654+/-0.024 and prove genuine six-photon entanglement by, amongst others, a two-setting witness yielding -0.422+/-0.148. This state has remarkable properties; e.g., it allows obtaining inequivalent entangled states of a lower qubit number via projective measurements, and it possesses a high entanglement persistency against qubit loss. We characterize the properties of the six-photon Dicke state experimentally by detecting and analyzing the entanglement of a variety of multipartite entangled states.

Experiments on Multiphoton Entanglement

Nikolai Kiesel

Entanglement lies at the heart of quantum mechanics and challenged the intuition of physicists ever since it was discovered. At the same time, it is a powerful tool that serves as a key resource for quantum communication and quantum computation schemes. Many of these applications rely on multiparticle entanglement, whose description, generation and manipulation became therefore a very active field in theoretical and experimental quantum information science. The goals are here to classify and understand the different types of entanglement, to find new applications and to control and analyze the quantum states experimentally. In this thesis, the experimental observation and analysis of two different types of four-photon polarization entangled states is presented: The cluster state and the symmetric Dicke state with two excitations. For this purpose, experimental setups based on spontaneous parametric down conversion and linear optics with conditional detection were designed. They allowed to observe the cluster state with a fidelity of 74.1 % and the symmetric Dicke state with a fidelity of 84.4 %. The cluster state experiment included the development of a new instrument that is of interest for linear optics quantum logic in general: A probabilistic controlled phase gate that is, due to the simplification of a previous approach, highly stable and can actually be used in multiphoton experiments. The quality of the gate is evaluated by analyzing its entangling capability and by performing full process tomography. The achieved results demonstrate that this device is well suited for implementation in various multiphoton quantum information protocols. In order to study the observed quantum states, efficient analysis tools are introduced. It was possible to verify that essential properties of the ideal states are indeed reproduced in the experiment, among others, the presence of genuine four-partite entanglement. A particular focus is put on the behavior of the states under projective measurements and photon loss. Several new insights in their entanglement structure are revealed and verified experimentally. We further demonstrate properties that are characteristic for the entanglement classes of the states. These can be used to infer the applicability of the observed states for certain distributed quantum communication applications. The presented experiments are generic for the design of setups to observe cluster- and symmetric Dicke states with a higher number of photons. Furthermore, also the efficient non-tomographic methods for state analysis we employ can directly be generalized to experiments with higher qubit numbers, where the reduction of the experimental effort for state analysis is even more crucial.

Experimental Realization of Dicke States of up to Six Qubits for Multiparty Quantum Networking

Robert Prevedel, G. Cronenberg, Mark Tame +4 more

We report the first experimental generation and characterization of a six-photon Dicke state. The produced state shows a fidelity of F=0.56+/-0.02 with respect to an ideal Dicke state and violates a witness detecting genuine six-qubit entanglement by 4 standard deviations. We confirm characteristic Dicke properties of our resource and demonstrate its versatility by projecting out four- and five-photon Dicke states, as well as four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and W states. We also show that Dicke states have interesting applications in multiparty quantum networking protocols such as open-destination teleportation, telecloning, and quantum secret sharing.

Multi-particle Correlations and Characteristic Bell Inequalities

Ch. Schmid, Nikolai Kiesel, Wiesław Laskowski +3 more

The correlations between local measurement results are characteristic for multi-partite quantum systems. Under the condition of local realism, which assumes that properties of physical systems exist independent of being measured, and that space-like separated actions on the system cannot influence each other, these correlations are constrained by Bell-inequalities. Quantum mechanics predicts correlations which are not explainable under these two assumptions. The resulting violation of Bell inequalities was originally studied for pairs of entangled particles (Einstein et al.,1935). Meanwhile these ideas were extended to three-and more partite quantum states in particular with respect to the different kinds of multi-particle entanglement and their implications on the obtainable correlations (Mermin, 1990). Here we present a method to construct characteristic Bell inequalities for particular four-qubit states. These inequalities are a versatile tool, not only to provide evidence for non-locality, but also for the characterization of the states, with respect to detection of genuine multipartite entanglement and to state discrimination. Exemplarily we apply our approach to the symmetric four qubit Dicke-state (Dicke, 1954) with two excitations. (A symmetric N-qubit Dicke state with M excitations is the equal superposition of N-qubit pure product states having M logical 1 's and (N-M) logical 0's.) Experimentally the state was observed with photons as carrier of the qubits, using polarization encoding.
