Abstract

We demonstrate photon-spin polarization transfer. g-factor plays a key role in this transfer process. We obtained g∼0 in GaAs/AlGaAs system, which showed anomalous phenomena suggesting population transfer from photons to nuclear spins through electron spins.

Polarization transfer from photon to electron spin in g factor engineered quantum wells

Hideo Kosaka, Yasuyoshi Mitsumori, Yoshiaki Rikitake +1 more

The authors demonstrate polarization transfer from a photon to an electron spin intermediated by a light-hole exciton in a GaAs∕AlGaAs quantum well, which has an engineered electron g factor of less than 0.01 for an in-plane magnetic field. Negative spin polarization was clearly observed at the selective excitation of the light-hole exciton from two-color time-resolved Kerr rotation. This demonstration is a necessary step towards demonstrating coherence transfer from a photon to an electron spin, which is necessary for building a quantum repeater used for long distance quantum communications.

A quantum device interfacing photons and spins for quantum repeaters

Hideo Kosaka, Takeshi Kutsuwa, K. Arai +6 more

We present experimental and theoretical approach for building a quantum repeater. Device structure for quantum state transfer from a photon to an electron spin was designed, fabricated and evaluated. Light‐hole exciton excitation in GaAs/AlGaAs‐quantum well with near‐zero electron g‐factor showed “negative polarization”, which indicates polarization transfer from a photon to an electron spin. We have also observed dynamic nuclear polarization implying polarization transfer from a photon to a nuclear spin intermediated by an electron spin.

Quantum photonics and quantum transport approach for realizing photon-spin quantum state transfer device

Hideo Kosaka, Takeshi Kutsuwa, K. Arai +6 more

We present photon-spin quantum-state-transfer (QST) approach. GaAs/AlGaAs-QW with g~0 showed nonlinear B-field dependence of spin precession, suggesting photon-to-nuclei polarization transfer. 2DEG with quantum-point-contact on InGaAs/InP showed telecomwavelength-sensitive quantum transport. Efficient/high-fidelity QST conditions were also found.

Conversion of photon spin to electron spin for quantum repetition

Thomas Szkopek, Deepak S. Rao, Hans D. Robinson +2 more

Coherent spin transfer from photons to electrons is a key process in semiconductor quantum repeaters. We discuss experimental progress towards this goal, including the capture, detection and storage of single photoelectrons in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures.

Time-optimal polarization transfer from an electron spin to a nuclear spin

Haidong Yuan, Robert Zeier, Nikolas Pomplun +2 more

Polarization transfers from an electron spin to a nuclear spin are essential for various physical tasks, such as dynamic nuclear polarization in nuclear magnetic resonance and quantum information processing on hybrid electron-nuclear spin systems. We present time-optimal schemes for electron-nuclear polarization transfers which improve on conventional approaches, and we thereby establish an important class of faster controls. We highlight how time-optimal polarization transfers and their optimality are related to the time optimality of unitary transformations. Moreover, our work develops generally applicable analytic methods for analyzing the limits in controlling quantum systems.

Single photon response in GaAs quantum transport devices for photon‐spin quantum state transfer

Takeshi Kutsuwa, K. Arai, H. Shigyo +5 more

Quantum information can be stored and manipulated by an electron spin if its state was faithfully transferred from messenger photon qubit. Such a quantum state transfer needs to have a function of conversion from photon polarization to electron spin state and flagging the safe conversion without destroying the spin state. We have achieved single photon response by using a quantum dot as an electron trap and a quantum point contact as a charge sensor on GaAs/AlGaAs-based modulation doped structure.
