Nonlinear dynamic properties of nonreciprocal indirect interband photonic transitions

Abstract

The nonlinear modulation dynamic properties of nonreciprocal indirect interband photonic transitions have been theoretically investigated in this paper. It is found that the period of such complete interband photonic transitions can be modulated for the relatively weak nonlinear effect, while interband transitions can be partially or even completely suppressed for relatively strong nonlinear effect, i.e., the dynamic behaviors of this system can be completely decided by nonlinear effects and dynamic modulations. Phase plane analysis is used to explain these dynamic behaviors.

Front-induced intraband indirect photonic transition in slow-light waveguide

Mahmoud Gaafar, Dirk Jalas, Liam O’Faoláin +4 more

The process of an optical signal undergoing a transition between two modes of a photonic structure is referred to as a photonic transition. We show that a signal wave interacting with a free carrier front in a slow light waveguide experiences indirect photonic transitions leading to transmission or reflection from the moving front. Theory and experimental results are presented. The front induced dynamic frequency conversion is also compared to the frequency shifting based on other nonlinear effects like cross-phase modulation and four wave mixing.

Dynamic Nonreciprocity with a Kerr Nonlinear Resonator

Rui-Kai Pan, Lei Tang, Keyu Xia +1 more

On-chip optical nonreciprocal devices are vital components for integrated photonic systems and scalable quantum information processing. Nonlinear optical isolators and circulators have attracted considerable attention because of their fundamental interest and their important advantages in integrated photonic circuits. However, optical nonreciprocal devices based on Kerr or Kerr-like nonlinearity are subject to dynamical reciprocity when the forward and backward signals coexist simultaneously in a nonlinear system. Here, we theoretically propose a method for realizing on-chip nonlinear isolators and circulators with dynamic nonreciprocity. Dynamic nonreciprocity is achieved via the chiral modulation on the resonance frequency due to coexisting self- and cross-Kerr nonlinearities in an optical ring resonator. This work showing dynamic nonreciprocity with a Kerr nonlinear resonator can be an essential step toward integrated optical isolation.

Optically Induced Indirect Photonic Transitions in a Slow Light Photonic Crystal Waveguide

Michel Castellanos Muñoz, Alexander Yu. Petrov, Liam O’Faoláin +3 more

We demonstrate indirect photonic transitions in a silicon slow light photonic crystal waveguide. The transitions are driven by an optically generated refractive index front that moves along the waveguide and interacts with a signal pulse copropagating in the structure. We experimentally confirm a theoretical model which indicates that the ratio of the frequency and wave vector shifts associated with the indirect photonic transition is identical to the propagation velocity of the refractive index front. The physical origin of the transitions achieved here is fundamentally different than in previously proposed refractive index modulation concepts with fixed temporal and spatial modulation frequencies; as here, the interaction with the refractive index front results in a Doppler-like signal frequency and wave vector shift. Consequently, the bandwidth over which perfect mode frequency and wave vector matching is achieved is not intrinsically limited by the shape of the photonic bands, and tuning of the indirect photonic transitions is possible without any need for geometrical modifications of the structure. Our device is genuinely nonreciprocal, as it provides different frequency shifts for co- and counterpropagating signal and index fronts.

Nonlinear Optical Absorption Caused By Interaction Between Interband - And Intraband-resonant Lights In Multiple Quantum Well Structure

Susumu Noda, Tetsuya Uemura, A. Sasaki

There is a great interest in nonlinear optical phenomena in multiple quantum well (MQW) structure. However, the investigation has been focused on either interband or intraband transition. If the interband and intraband transitions are utilized simultaneously, new application fields such as light-controlled optical modulation can be expected. (Fig.1) In this paper, we investigate theoretically the nonlinear optical absorption of interband-resonant light in n-doped MQW structure, which is caused by the simultaneous incidence of intraband-resonant light. Here we use the transition from bound to extended states as the intraband transition.

Analysis of transient interband light modulation by ultrashort intersubband resonant light pulses in semiconductor quantum wells

Arup Neogi, Yutaka Takahashi, Hitoshi Kawaguchi

We explore the transient characteristics of an interband resonant light modulation process by ultrashort intersubband resonant light pulses in semiconductor quantum wells (QW's). The modulation characteristics in a three-level semiconductor QW system, including the effects due to in-plane momentum, have been investigated by a numerical analysis of the coupled Bloch equations using a density-matrix approach. We have studied the effect of the carrier density and the nature of the intersubband coupling light on the transient absorption features of the interband light. The modulation process has been compared in doped and undoped QW's. The switching behavior of the strong interband light field in presence of a train of intersubband light pulses has also been discussed.
