Performance analysis of finite-length LDPC codes

Abstract

In this paper, we are concerned with the finite-length analysis of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes when used over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. We present the iterative decoding algorithm of LDPC codes, and we also discuss the encoding methods and the bipartite graph representation of LDPC codes ensemble. Finite-length LDPC code performances are investigated, and the influence of cycle is pointed out. Simulation results show that irregular LDPC codes with variable and check node degree distribution optimized for infinite-length codes are not optimal for finite-length LDPC codes, and the error patterns of both regular and irregular codes are investigated as an effort to improve the performance and design methodology of finite-length LDPC codes.

Studies on Lowering the Error Floors of Finite Length LDPC codes

Huanlin Li

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes can approach the Shannon limit performance closely, and are becoming one of the most promising channel codes in the Error Control Coding area. The performance of an LDPC code with given length is mainly affected by the sizes of some combinatorial characteristics of its corresponding bipartite graph and the distribution of variable degrees and check node degrees. With the help of the density evolution algorithm, randomly designed LDPC codes, with carefully chosen degree distribution pairs, have been shown to achieve better Shannon capacity performance than their regular counterparts when decoded using the iterative belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm. However, regular LDPC codes outperform their irregular counterparts in term of their error floors. Therefore, construction of LDPC codes which have both attractive error rate performance and low error floor performance has become an attractive topic.Currently, optimization of variable node degree distribution and check node degree distribution for an LDPC code with given length, which could help the code to achieve good Shannon limit performance, has been extensively studied. In this dissertation, we demonstrate some approaches of improving the error floor performance for a given LDPC code with desired degree distribution pair. The contribution mainly includes three parts. In the first part, the relationship between cycles and unfavorable combinatorial

Optimization of Construction and Encoding for Finite Length Irregular LDPC Codes

N Cetc

The main influence for the performance of finite length Low-Density Parity-Check(LDPC) codes is analyzed. According to optimum choice for degree distribution, a check matrix is constructed with improved Progressive-Edge-Growth (PEG) algorithm. A practical efficient encoding algorithm is proposed to optimize the check matrix. A finite length irregular LDPC code with low error-floor performance and approximate linear encoding complexity is obtained. This optimization method can be easily extended to general communication channels.

Performance Study of a Class of Irregular LDPC Codes Based on Their Weight Distribution Analysis

F. Vatta, Fulvio Babich, Flavio Ellero +3 more

This paper investigates the performance of irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on memoryless BI-AWGN (Binary Input - Additive White Gaussian Noise) channels, with sum-product decoding. Objective of this work is to study the relationship between an LDPC code performance and some parameters specifying the code itself, such as the coefficients of its degree distributions. In fact, these coefficients where shown in Di et al.'s 2006 paper to determine the growth rate of the minimum distance of an LDPC code, which can be only sublinear in the block length in some well defined conditions of the degree distribution pair.

Performance evaluation of regular cycle non-binary LDPC codes in AWGN channel

Ameenudeen Pe, Anchare V. Babu

Low Density Parity Check Codes (LDPC) are a group of channel codes which can be decoded using a graph. LDPC codes are known to give near Shannon limit performance in Additive White Gaussian Channel (AWGN), but for large block-lengths and irregular construction. To overcome this limitation, it has been proposed to define codes over a higher order Galois Field. In this paper,we construct a regular cycle non binary LDPC code over GF(q), where q=2p.We use a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) based low complexity algorithm to decode the LDPC code defined over a large Galois Field. We evaluate the performance of these codes in AWGN channel using computer simulations and show that they are giving excellent BER performance.

An Iterative Scheme of Stopping Set Enlargement in The Design of Short-Length Irregular LDPC Codes

Jingyu Kang, Pingyi Fan, Zhigang Cao

Abstract: Small stopping sets have been proved to be harmful to the error floor performance of a finite-length irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code over the binary erasure channel (BEC). On the additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, small stopping sets are expected to have a similar effect. This paper proposes an algorithm that iteratively removes the small-stopping-set-inducing patterns from the graph of a randomly generated irregular LDPC code by means of node exchange, aiming at enlarging the average size of stopping sets in this code. Computer simulation results show that the short-length LDPC codes after our processing achieve a considerable performance improvement in the low-BER region compared to the randomly generated codes. Key words: Error floor, irregular LDPC codes, iterative processing, small stopping set 1

On the design of LDPC code ensembles for BIAWGN channels

Hamid Saeedi, Amir H. Banihashemi

Existing design methods for irregular Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes over the additive white Gaussian noise channel are based on using asymptotic analysis tools such as density evolution in an optimization process. Such a process is computationally expensive particularly when a large number of constituent variable node degrees are involved in the design. In this paper, we propose a systematic approach for the design of irregular LDPC codes. The proposed method, which is based on a pre-computed upper bound on the fraction of edges connected to variable nodes of degree 3, is considerably less complex than the conventional optimization approach. Through a number of examples, we demonstrate that using our method, ensembles with performance very close to those devised based on optimization, can be designed. In addition to having very good performance, the number of constituent variable node degrees in the designed ensembles is only three or four. This, in some cases, is much smaller than the corresponding number for optimization-based designs with similar performance.
