Abstract

High-contrast coherent population trapping signals were observed on the Cs D1 line by use of a bichromatic linear polarized light (lin‖lin field). A maximum absorption contrast of about 10% was obtained. This was nearly twice as high as that measured with the standard configuration of bichromatic circularly polarized light (σ-σ field). The results are compared with density matrix calculations of 4 and 5 level systems.

We propose and study, theoretically and experimentally, a new scheme of excitation of a coherent population trapping resonance for the D1 line of alkali atoms with nuclear spin I = 3/2 by bichromatic linearly polarized light (lin‖lin field) under the conditions of spectral resolution of the excited state. The unique properties of this scheme result in a high contrast of dark resonance for the D1 line of 87 Rb.

We describe a simple method for observing high-contrast coherent population trapping signals on the Cs D1line. The high-contrast signals were achieved by use of a bichromatic linear polarized light (linparlin field).

High contrast atomic magnetometer based on coherent population trapping

Ailin Yang, Guoqing Yang, Yunfei Xu +1 more

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance excited on the D1 line of 87 Rb atoms by bichromatic linearly polarized laser light. The experimental results show that a lin ‖ lin transition scheme is a promising alternative to the conventional circular—circular transition scheme for an atomic magnetometer. Compared with the circular light transition scheme, linear light accounts for high-contrast transmission resonances, which makes this excitation scheme promising for high-sensitivity magnetometers. We also use linear light and circular light to detect changes of a standard magnetic field, separately.

High-contrast dark resonance in σ+ - σ- optical field

Sergei V Kargapol'tsev, John E. Kitching, Leo W. Hollberg +3 more

The amplitude of Λ resonance in alkali atoms is limited by perturbing cycling transitions in the case of D2 line or by existence of additional trapping states in the case of D1 line. We propose to eliminate these extra trapping states by using two counter-propagating bichromatic fields of orthogonal circular polarizations. The experiment is in accordance with the theoretical proposal. The result refers to small-size cells and is important for applications in miniaturized atomic clocks.

High-contrast dark resonances on the D1 line of alkali metals in the field of counterpropagating waves

A. V. Taǐchenachev, Valeriy I. Yudin, Vladimir L Velichansky +4 more

A new method providing a significant increase in the amplitude and contrast of dark resonances is proposed. The method is based on the use of the σ + −σ − configuration of polarized counterpropagating waves, D 1 -line excitation in alkali metal atoms, and small-sized cells. Qualitative considerations of the scheme are confirmed by the results of numerical calculations. A variant of a standing wave with homogeneous circular polarization is also discussed.

Study of an observation method based on crossed polarizers for high-contrast coherent population trapping

Yuichiro Yano, Shigeyoshi Goka

In this paper, we propose an observation method based on crossed polarizers to obtain high-contrast coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance with parallel linearly polarized light (lin 11 lin field). Experimental results show that a high resonance contrast of 88.4 % can be observed using a133Cs gas cell and D1-line vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL).
