Quantum phase properties of nonlinear optical phenomena

R. Tanaś, Adam Miranowicz, Ts. Gantsog

We review some quantum-phase descriptions of optical fields. We focus on real fields that can be generated in practice in various nonlinear optical processes. Thus, we rather avoid discussions of phase formalisms as such and try to exploit their practical applicability in the description of optical fields. In the description of the phase properties we use two different, though related formalisms: the Pegg-Barnett Hermitian phase formalism and the formalism based on $s$-parametrized phase distributions.

Gain spectroscopy of excitonic molecules and its dynamics in a ZnSe single quantum well

Vladimir G. Kozlov, P. Kelkar, A. Vertikov +5 more

We demonstrate spectroscopically how optical gain is formed in an interacting system of excitons and biexcitons in a single ZnSe quantum well. The dynamics of gain formation are studied on a subpicosecond time scale in pump-probe experiments, revealing the influence of coherent effects and the impact of exciton-exciton and exciton-biexciton interactions. Spectrally resolved, polarization-dependent degenerate four-wave-mixing experiments further demonstrate how the excitonic many-body phenomena profoundly influence the nonlinear optical response in this II-VI semiconductor heterostructure. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dynamic Optical Bistabilities in ZnSe/ZnS Multiple Quantum Wells

Yudong Liu, Xiangming Yang, Chunfei Li +4 more

The excitonic optical nonlinearities in II-VI semiconductor thin films and multiple quantum wells (MQWs) are much complicated than those of GaAs MQWs because the wider band gap and smaller excitons of II-VI semiconductor materials. We report here the observations of dynamic optical bistabilities in ZnSe/ZnS MQWs at low temperature caused by excitonic optical nonlinearity.
