Entangled photon pairs are an essential tool for various quantum protocols as teleportation [1], entanglement swapping [2], and realisation of quantum gates [3]. The traditional way to produce entangled photon pairs is the spontaneous parametric downconversion [4]. These sources are well developed and reliable. However, the number of photon pairs emitted in downconversion obey the thermal distribution.

Coherent Optical Control of Quantum Dots: Spin Qubits and Flying Qubits

A. P. Burgers

Coherent control of solid-state qubits lies at the heart of most quantum information architectures. In quantum dots (QDs), optical fields are an attractive medium for qubit manipulation and readout. The entanglement between a QD spin qubit and an emitted photonic qubit allows for the transport of quantum information between distant quantum memories via decoherence resistant photon channels. I will present recent experimental work showing the entanglement between a single electron spin confined to an InAs QD and its spontaneously emitted photon. This entanglement is significant for the further development of quantum information technologies using QDs and forms the foundation of on-chip technologies using photonic crystal pathways. In addition, I will discuss on-going work on teleportation of information from a single photon generated in a spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process to a QD spin through intermediate interference between the SPDC photon and the dot’s emitted photon. The ability to integrate two quantum information platforms is not only exciting in its own right, but this technique could allow for an entanglement swapping bridge between other matter-qubit (ions, NV centers, etc.) based quantum memories.

Towards Scalable Entangled Photon Sources with Self-Assembled InAs/GaAs Quantum Dots

Jianping Wang, Ming Gong, Guang-Can Guo +1 more

The biexciton cascade process in self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) provides an ideal system for realizing deterministic entangled photon-pair sources, which are essential to quantum information science. The entangled photon pairs have recently been generated in experiments after eliminating the fine-structure splitting (FSS) of excitons using a number of different methods. Thus far, however, QD-based sources of entangled photons have not been scalable because the wavelengths of QDs differ from dot to dot. Here, we propose a wavelength-tunable entangled photon emitter mounted on a three-dimensional stressor, in which the FSS and exciton energy can be tuned independently, thereby enabling photon entanglement between dissimilar QDs. We confirm these results via atomistic pseudopotential calculations. This provides a first step towards future realization of scalable entangled photon generators for quantum information applications.
