Gradient-field permanent-magnet spin-flip laser

Abstract

A CO-laser-pumped InSb CW spin-flip Raman laser has been operated in a permanent magnet (∼1500 G) incorporating a field gradient that permits frequency tuning by moving the magnet relative to the InSb sample. Output lines up to the fifth Stokes and the second anti-Stokes are observed. Real-time Doppler-limited absorption spectroscopy employing a small external modulation coil is demonstrated.

Tunable Spin-Flip Raman Laser at Magnetic Field as Low as 400 G

C. Kumar N. Patel

We report the first operation of a tunable cw spin-flip Raman laser at magnetic fields as low as 400 G. We also report the first observation of a tunable cw anti-Stokes spin-flip Raman (SFR) laser. These results should allow the SFR lasers to be operated with small electromagnets rather than the superconducting solenoids used heretofore.

Resonant peak in the output spectral profile of an ionic anti-Stokes Raman laser

Sergei A Babin, Sergey I. Kablukov, S. Khorev +4 more

Continuous-wave generation of the anti-Stokes Raman laser is demonstrated in the new $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ scheme $\mathrm{Ar}$ II ${3d}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{G}_{9/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{4p}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{F}_{7/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{4s}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{D}_{5/2}$ with quasimetastable initial and final levels. Red pump radiation with wavelength ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{p}=611 \mathrm{nm}$ from a dye laser that excites transition ${3d}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{G}_{9/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{4p}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{F}_{7/2}$ is converted into the blue radiation at $\ensuremath{\lambda}=461 \mathrm{nm}$ ${(4p}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{F}_{7/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{4s}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}^{2}{D}_{5/2})$ with efficiency of about $30%.$ The tunability range spans more than 20 GHz around exact resonance, which is five times broader than the Doppler contour. The output frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$ is found to depend linearly on the frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}$ of the pump field: $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\simeq}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{p}{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{p}/\ensuremath{\lambda}.$ A sharp peak of output power is observed in the spectral profile at the exact resonance instead of the well-known two-photon dip. The model is proposed that includes ionic scattering in plasma and interaction of the running pump and standing output waves. The theory offers an interpretation of the observed peak.

Tuning and saturation behavior of the anti-Stokes Raman laser

J. C. White, Don O. Henderson

The tuning and saturation behavior of the anti-Stokes Raman laser is examined experimentally for the first reported time in a Raman medium of inverted, metastable Tl* (6p(2)P degrees (3/2)). Two significant regions of saturation are identified that correspond to atomic saturation and pump depletion of the input laser field.

Spin flip Raman scattering of harmonically generated 5.3μm radiation

Robert L. Allwood, Richard B. Dennis, R. Mellish +3 more

The authors report the observation of stimulated Stokes scattering of 5.3 mu m pump radiation by spin flip excitations in InSb, using a 10.6 mu m CO 2 laser, together with a tellurium frequency doubler, as the 5.3 mu m source. The effects of resonant enhancement on the 5.3 mu m scattering are discussed and comparison made with 10.6 mu m results. The observation of atmospheric water vapour absorption lines near 5.5 mu m demonstrates the application of the spin flip source to high resolution spectroscopy.

Anti-Stokes Raman lasers without inversion

Andrew J. Merriam, Alexei V. Sokolov

We describe the propagation dynamics and gain line shape of pulsed, tunable, anti-Stokes Raman lasers without inversion. Analytical expressions for the gain are obtained and evaluated for inhomogeneously broadened atomic media. The inversionless gain, which requires selective pumping of one of two lower atomic states, occurs regardless of the relative populations of these states and vanishes when the atomic populations are in equilibrium.
