Abstract

We present an analytical solution for the coupled rate and propagation equations for a dynamic two-level homogeneously broadened system interacting with radiation and with constant population inversion along the longitudinal axis of the fiber, z. We derive an analytical solution for the z dependence of these equations, which greatly simplifies the numerical solution for the output powers’ time dependence. Amplified spontaneous emission and background loss influences are considered in the model, in contrast to the previous analytical solution presented by Y. Sun et al. The solution is derived, and the importance of each term for the dynamic modeling of typical erbium-doped fiber amplifiers is analyzed.

Analysis of the effect of upconversion on signal amplification in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs)

Inna Nusinsky, Amos A. Hardy

The effect of homogeneous upconversion on the performance of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is analyzed numerically, by means of a set of rate equations model. In particular, the influence of pump power, signal power, and Er/sup 3+/ concentration on the degradation, due to upconversion, is examined. Forward pumping is considered and amplified spontaneous emission, as well as scattering loss are taken into account. In addition, approximate analytical solutions, for the rate equations, which include the effect of the cooperative upconversion, are presented. It is shown that under the considered conditions, these analytical solutions provide a good approximation to the exact numerical solution and thus may be used for the design of such amplifiers.

"Analytical Model of Pulse Amplification in Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier "

Nour. A. Naser, Muhammed. R. Harb, Hassan Abid Yasser

"Doping a part of the optical fiber core by (Er3+ ) ions in presence of external pumping power will lead to form the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA).The performance of this optical amplifier depends on (the power and the wavelength of the pumping laser, the power and wavelength of the input signal, amplifier length, ion concentration). These parameters will affect the characteristics of EDFA such as amplifier gain, gain saturation, noise figure and output power. However, these characteristics can be determined by solving the EDFA propagation and rate equations. The solution of these equations of two-level laser medium can be done numerically. In this paper, we are proposed a novel method to solve these equations. The reconstructed results are perfectly coincided the well known numerical results.

Recovery of population inversion in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier observed by temporally resolving amplified spontaneous emissions

K. Kuroda, Yuzo Yoshikuni

We report on the recovery of population inversion in a CW-pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifier. Spontaneous emissions after the input of signal pulses were temporally resolved. The recovery time for population inversion was estimated to be a few hundred microseconds. The pump power and signal width dependences of the recovery were measured. We discuss the dependences by applying an analytical formula derived for the temporal evolution of population inversion.

Analytical model of an ytterbium-erbium fiber saturating amplifier

V. Yu. Golyshev

The amplification of an optical signal in an erbium-and ytterbium-doped fiber saturation-mode amplifier is considered. Analytical distributions of the inverse population, pump power, and signal intensity along an active light guide are derived. Spectral dependences of the saturation power and amplification threshold are obtained for different mode sizes of the radiation and ytterbium-to-erbium active ion ratios. The optimal active-fiber length is calculated.

Analytical method for few-mode erbium doped fiber amplifiers

Xiangwei Chen, Baojian Wu, Yanqiu Xie +2 more

Abstract An analytical method for few-mode erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is proposed by introducing the uniformity coefficient of population inversion. The validity of the derivation process of the analytical method is identified by the numerical method. It is shown that the more uniform the transverse distribution of erbium ion population density at the metastable level, the closer the analytical solution is to the numerical result. The optimized uniformity coefficient is also applied to the case of varying pump power to some extent. The analytical method is especially suitable for the design of the gain-saturated EDFAs.
