Abstract

We report on the observation of optical limiting and bistability using Stark tunable gases in a mirrorless geometry. Device applications such as multilevel logic elements and optical limiters are presented. Polarization and saturation effects as well as switching energies are discussed.

Adaptive Optical Logic And Switching Devices

David Kagan, Harry Friedmann

Tunable Optical Bistability, where a low power control beam is used to adapt the hysteresis response and the switching of optically bistable elements, is shown to occur in various systems with a bichromatic input. Some applications of this are suggested for more complex logic gates and for pattern recognition.

Optical Bistable Devices: The Basic Components Of All-Optical Systems?

H. M. Gibbs, S. L. McCall, Thirumalai Venkatesan

Intrinsic optical bistability experiments are reviewed and their contributions summarized. Very large nonlinearities in semiconductors give reason to hope that practical devices may evolve in the near future. Characteristics important for practical optical logic devices are discussed: size, temperature range, holding intensity, switching energy, switching times, and wavelength range and stability.

Mirrorless optical bistability induced by Stark effect at 10. 784 μm

Xuecai Yu

The Stark bistability and optical limiting utilizing the interaction between the R(18) line of an isotopic C13O216 laser and the asQ(6,6) transition in NH gas, are observed. The stead-state theory with Doppler broadening is analyzed. The experimental results are approximately consistent with the theoritical analyses.

A mirrorless bistable device composed of NH2D gas stark cell and optical detector/electronic feedback loop is reported in this paper. The bistability of the devios is observed experimentally and the result of the experiment is agreement with the theoritical analysis.
