Coherent states over symplectic homogeneous spaces

Abstract

A generalization of the Perelomov procedure for the construction of coherent states is proposed. The new procedure is used to construct systems of coherent states in the carrier spaces of unitary irreducible representations of groups G=S∅V, where V is a vector space and S⊂GL(V). The coherent states are shown to be labeled by the points in cotangent bundles T*𝒪* of orbits 𝒪* of S in V*, the dual of V; it is proven that T*𝒪* is a symplectic homogeneous space of G. The generalized procedure for the construction of coherent states presented in this paper is shown to encompass as special cases the constructions known in the literature for the coherent states of the Weyl–Heisenberg, the ‘‘ax+b,’’ and the Galilei and Poincaré groups. Moreover, completely new sets of coherent states are constructed for the Euclidean group E(n), where the Perelomov construction fails.

A general theorem on square-integrability: Vector coherent states

S. Twareque Ali

We derive a generalization of the well-known theorem for the square integrability of a unitary irreducible representation of a locally compact group. The generalization covers the case of representations admitting vector coherent states. The result is illustrated by an example drawn from the isochronous Galilei group. The construction yields a wide variety of coherent states, labeled by phase space points, which satisfy a resolution of the identity condition, and incorporate spin degrees of freedom.

Spin Coherent States

Didier Robert, Monique Combescure

In this chapter we consider the unit sphere \(\mathbb S^2\) of the Euclidean space \(\mathbb R^3\) with its canonical symplectic structure is a phase space. Then coherent states are labelled by points on \(\mathbb S^2\) and allow us to build a quantization of the two-sphere \(\mathbb S^2\). They are defined in each finite dimensional space of an irreducible unitary representation of the symmetry rotation group SO(3) (or its covering SU(2)) of \(\mathbb S^2\) and give a semiclassical interpretation for the spin. As an application we state the Berezin-Lieb inequalities and compute the thermodynamic limit for large spin systems.

SU(N) coherent states and irreducible Schwinger bosons

Manu Mathur, Indrakshi Raychowdhury

We exploit the SU( N ) irreducible Schwinger boson to construct SU( N ) coherent states. This construction of an SU( N ) coherent state is analogous to the construction of the simplest Heisenberg–Weyl coherent states. The coherent states belonging to irreducible representations of SU( N ) are labeled by the eigenvalues of ( N − 1) SU( N ) Casimir operators and characterized by ( N − 1) complex orthonormal vectors describing the SU( N ) group manifold.

The Clebsch–Gordan problem of the SL(2,R) coherent states

Debabrata Basu

The Clebsch–Gordan problems of the Barut–Girardello, and Perelomov coherent states of SL(2,R) are studied using the associated Hilbert spaces as the respective carrier spaces of the representations of the group. For the Barut–Girardello coherent states this Hilbert space is a subspace of the Bargmann–Segal Hilbert space B(C2) called the ‘‘reduced Bargmann space.’’ The generators of the group in this realization are essentially the boson operators of Holman and Biedenharn which provide a convenient starting point of the problem. For the Perelomov coherent states the associated Hilbert space turns out to be Bargmann’s canonical carrier space for the realization of the discrete series of representations, namely, the Hilbert space of functions analytic inside the open unit disc. The scalar product, the principal vector, and a complete orthonormal set in these Hilbert spaces are constructed and used for the explicit evaluation of the Clebsch–Gordan coefficients. For each of the coherent state systems the product state turns out to be the principal vector and, therefore, the coupled state itself is the Clebsch–Gordan coefficient. For the Barut–Girardello coherent states this is, apart from normalization, the product of a Bessel function and d-function. For the Perelomov coherent states, on the other hand, this closely resembles the Clebsch–Gordan coefficient of the SU(2) coherent states.

Coherent States on Spheres

Brian C. Hall, Jeffrey J. Mitchell, Jeffrey +1 more

Abstract. We describe a family of coherent states and an associated resolution of the identity for a quantum particle whose classical configuration space is the d-dimensional sphere S d. The coherent states are labeled by points in the associated phase space T ∗ (S d). These coherent states are not of Perelomov type but rather are constructed as the eigenvectors of suitably defined annihilation operators. We describe as well the Segal–Bargmann representation for the system, the associated unitary Segal–Bargmann transform, and a natural inversion formula. Although many of these results are in principle special cases of the results of B. Hall and M. Stenzel, we give here a substantially different description based on ideas of T. Thiemann and of K. Kowalski and J. Rembieliński. All of these results can be generalized to a system whose configuration space is an arbitrary compact symmetric space. We focus on the sphere case in order to carry out the calculations in a self-contained and explicit way.

Coherent states for n-dimensional Euclidean groups E(n) and their application

Christopher John Isham, John R. Klauder

The n-dimensional Euclidean group—the group of rotations and translations of Rn —is the natural canonical group for quantizing a system whose configuration space is the sphere Sn−1, n≥2. Since every unitary irreducible representation of E(n) is nonsquare integrable it follows that coherent states involving the whole group do not exist for such representations. Instead, coherent states are defined based on unitary, reducible representations of the group, and it will be shown that, with such states, quantum dynamics on the sphere admits a path-integral representation involving novel first-order classical actions defined on E(n) as well as integrations over the entire group manifold at each time slice. Irreducibility of the quantization is achieved through a final limiting process.
