Abstract

We present here an experimental demonstration of the direct production of a multimode non-classical state, using an OPO in a degenerate cavity. The cavity is self-imaging, which means that theoretically all transverse modes of a given wavelength can be resonant. In particular, any image imprinted on a laser beam can be transmitted through it. This cavity consists in a plane mirror, a lens, and a spherical mirror.

Direct generation of a multi-transverse mode non-classical state of light

Bénoît Chalopin, Francesco Scazza, Claude Fabre +1 more

Quantum computation and communication protocols require quantum resources which are in the continuous variable regime squeezed and/or quadrature entangled optical modes. To perform more and more complex and robust protocols, one needs sources that can produce in a controlled way highly multimode quantum states of light. One possibility is to mix different single mode quantum resources. Another is to directly use a multimode device, either in the spatial or in the frequency domain. We present here the first experimental demonstration of a device capable of producing simultaneously several squeezed transverse modes of the same frequency and which is potentially scalable. We show that this device, which is an Optical Parametric Oscillator using a self-imaging cavity, produces a multimode quantum resource made of three squeezed transverse modes.

Multimode quantum properties of a self-imaging OPO: squeezed vacuum and EPR beams generation

Lopez, L., Bénoît Chalopin, Arnaud Rivière De La Souchère +3 more

We investigate the spatial quantum properties of the light emitted by a perfectly spatially degenerate optical parametric oscillator (self-imaging OPO). We show that this device produces local squeezing for areas bigger than a coherence are that depends on the crystal length and pump width. Furthermore, it generates local EPR beams in the far field. We show, calculating the eigenmodes of the system, that it is highly multimode for realistic experimental parameters.

Multimode non-classical light generation through the OPO threshold

Bénoît Chalopin, Francesco Scazza, Claude Fabre +1 more

We show that an Optical Parametric Oscillator which is simultaneously resonant for several modes, either spatial or temporal, generates both below and above threshold a multimode non-classical state of light consisting of squeezed vacuum states in all the non-oscillating modes. We confirm this prediction by an experiment dealing with the degenerate TEM$_{01}$ and TEM$_{10}$ modes. We show the conservation of non-classical properties when the threshold is crossed. The experiment is made possible by the implementation of a new method to lock the relative phase of the pump and the injected beam.

Quantum amplification of images in a c.w. optical parametric amplifier

Sylvain Gigan, L. Lopez, Nicolas Treps +2 more

In the experiment presented, a transverse multimode OPO pumped either below or above threshold in order to observe spatial quantum properties are realized. In the continuous variable regime, transverse quantum effects (spatial correlations, spatial squeezing or noiseless amplification of images), are predicted be observable in such OPO/OPA. The key point in this experiment is the use of transverse degenerate cavities, having a non negligible spatial bandwidth, and allowing the resonance of many transverse modes.

Experimental evidence of multimode non‐classical light emission using OPOs

Agnès Maître, Nicolas Treps, M. Martinelli +2 more

Abstract Any spatial measurement below the quantum standard limit requires multitransverse non‐classical light beams which can be produced by a transverse degenerate OPO. A multimode beam is characterized by a non uniform transverse repartition of noise. Using this criterion, we prove experimentally that a confocal Optical Parametric Oscillator emits a multimode non‐classical field.
