Abstract

We measure the effects of reservoir engineering on the decay of a coherent, many-body excitation in a BEC loaded into an optical lattice. We show both enhancement and suppression of decoherence vs. lattice depth.

A Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

Johannes Hecker Denschlag, J. E. Simsarian, Hartmut Häffner +6 more

We have performed a number of experiments with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Making use of the small momentum spread of a BEC and standard atom optics techniques, a high level of coherent control over an artificial solid-state system is demonstrated. We are able to load the BEC into the lattice ground state with a very high efficiency by adiabatically turning on the optical lattice. We coherently transfer population between lattice states and observe their evolution. Methods are developed and used to perform band spectroscopy. We use these techniques to build a BEC accelerator and a novel, coherent, large-momentum-transfer beam-splitter.

Short-time Enhancement of the Decay of Coherent Excitations in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Nir Bar‐Gill, Eitan E. Rowen, Gershon Kurizki +1 more

We study, both experimentally and theoretically, short-time modifications of the decay of excitations in a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) embedded in an optical lattice. Strong enhancement of the decay is observed compared to the Golden Rule results. This enhancement of decay increases with the lattice depth. It indicates that the description of decay modifications of few-body quantum systems also holds for decay of many-body excitations of a BEC.

Resonantly Enhanced Tunneling of Bose-Einstein Condensates in Periodic Potentials

Carlo Sias, Alessandro Zenesini, Hans Lignier +4 more

We report on measurements of resonantly enhanced tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates loaded into an optical lattice. By controlling the initial conditions of our system we were able to observe resonant tunneling in the ground and the first two excited states of the lattice wells. We also investigated the effect of the intrinsic nonlinearity of the condensate on the tunneling resonances.
