Abstract

We investigate the influence of the electron-phonon interaction on the optical response of quantum dots exposed to strong coherent fields. Nonlinear processes such as multi-phonon absorption and Mollow splitting are studied in sono- and photoluminescence spectra.

Resonance fluorescence of semiconductor quantum dots: Signatures of the electron-phonon interaction

Kwang Jun Ahn, Jens Förstner, A. Knorr

Using a fully quantized description of strongly confined electrons interacting with acoustic phonons and the photon field, the nonstationary resonance-fluorescence spectra of a semiconductor quantum dot are investigated. For excitation pulses with durations approaching typical electron-phonon scattering times, the virtual quantum processes yield an observable electron-phonon sideband broadening.

Electron-phonon dynamics in optically excited quantum dots: Exact solution for multiple ultrashort laser pulses

Alexei Vagov, V. M. Axt, T. Kühn

A model of semiconductor quantum dots coupled to phonons and laser light, which is relevant in the limit of strong electronic confinement, is investigated. For an arbitrary sequence of excitations by ultrafast pulses, analytical solutions are obtained for all pertinent density-matrix elements. The results are nonperturbative with respect to the coupling to both phonons and laser light. The derivation depends neither on a particular choice of electronic wave functions nor on a particular wave-vector dependence of the phonon interaction or phonon dispersion. All components of the density matrix exhibit oscillatory dependences on the pulse areas of the exciting pulses analogously to the Rabi oscillations known from simple two-level systems. Three typical applications of the general results are worked out: (a) the influence of phonons on four-wave-mixing spectra, (b) the coherent control of electronic dot occupations in the presence of phonons, and (c) the dynamics of phonon correlations including the formation of a stable polaron spatially localized in the dot and the emission of a pulsed phonon wave packet that leaves the dot.

Resonant nature of phonon-induced damping of Rabi oscillations in quantum dots

Paweł Machnikowski, Lucjan Jacak

Optically controlled coherent dynamics of charge (excitonic) degrees of freedom in a semiconductor quantum dot under the influence of lattice dynamics (phonons) is discussed theoretically. We show that the dynamics of the lattice response in the strongly nonlinear regime is governed by a semiclassical resonance between the phonon modes and the optically driven dynamics. We stress on the importance of the stability of intermediate states for the truly coherent control.

Twofold decoherence brought on by the phonon bath in a quantum-dot two-state system

Zhide Chen

Because of the inherent coupling, the influence from the phonon bath on the coherent energy exchange between a quantum-dot (QD) two-state system (TSS) and a resonant optical mode is a twofold action. One action is the influence on the construction of the coherence, and the other is on the constructed coherence. The latter has been extensively studied by the master-equation approach, whereas the former has been ignored so far. In the present paper, the influence from the phonon bath on the construction of the coherence is studied by using the small-polaron theory. It is found that in the presence of phonon coupling, the construction of the coherence depends on the state evolution of the phonon bath during the energy exchange. The coherence construction probability is calculated and found to be a decreasing function of both temperature and coupling strength. The spectrum including the twofold decoherence effect is calculated and the obtained result can help one to understand some peculiar observations in the photoluminescence spectrum of a QD TSS system, including the additional cavity line in the strong-coupling regime and the additional coherent scattering in the case of the Mollow triplet.

Influence of phonons on exciton-photon interaction and photon statistics of a quantum dot

M. Bagheri Harouni, R. Roknizadeh, M. H. Naderi

In this paper, we investigate phonon effects on the optical properties of a spherical quantum dot. For this purpose, we consider the interaction of a spherical quantum dot with classical and quantum fields while the exciton of quantum dot interacts with a solid-state reservoir. We show that phonons strongly affect the Rabi oscillations and optical coherence on first picoseconds of dynamics. We consider the quantum statistics of emitted photons by quantum dot and we show that these photons are antibunched and obey the sub-Poissonian statistics. In addition, we examine the effects of detuning and interaction of quantum dot with the cavity mode on optical coherence of energy levels. The effects of detuning and interaction of quantum dot with cavity mode on optical coherence of energy levels are compared to the effects of its interaction with classical pulse.

Optical Dynamics in Low-Dimensional Semiconductor Heterostructures

Carsten Weber

This work is focused on the optical dynamics of mesoscopic semiconductor heterostructures, using as prototypes zero-dimensional quantum dots and quantum cascade lasers which consist of quasitwo-dimensional quantum wells. Within a density matrix theory, a microscopic many-particle theory is applied to study scattering effects in these structures: the coupling to external as well as local fields, electron-phonon coupling, coupling to impurities, and Coulomb coupling. For both systems, the investigated effects are compared to experimentally observed results obtained during the past years. In quantum dots, the three-dimensional spatial confinement leads to the necessity to consider a quantum kinetic description of the dynamics, resulting in non-Markovian electron-phonon effects. This can be seen in the spectral phonon sidebands due to interaction with acoustic phonons as well as a damping of nonlinear Rabi oscillations which shows a nonmonotonous intensity and pulse duration dependence. An analysis of the inclusion of the self-interaction of the quantum dot shows that no dynamical local field terms appear for the simple two-level model. Considering local fields which have their origin in many quantum dots, consequences for a two-level quantum dot such as a zero-phonon line broadening and an increasing signal in photon echo experiments are found. For the use of quantum dots in an optical spin control scheme, it is found that the dephasing due to the electron-phonon interaction can be dominant in certain regimes. Furthermore, soliton and breather solutions are studied analytically in nonlinear quantum dot ensembles. Generalizing to quasi-two-dimensional structures, the intersubband dynamics of quantum cascade laser structures is investigated. A dynamical theory is considered in which the temporal evolution of the subband populations and the current density as well as the influence of scattering effects is studied. In the nonlinear regime, the scattering dependence and the importance of coherence for Rabi oscillations is investigated. The optically induced charge dynamics is discussed with respect to coherent effects. Calculations of the electronic density and pump-probe signals within a microscopic theory of dephasing show coherent transport effects such as gain oscillations, in agreement with recent experimental results.
