Generalized dressed and doubly-dressed multi-wave mixing

Abstract

We present a theoretical treatment for generalized dressed and doubly-dressed multi-wave mixing processes. Co-existing four-wave mixing (FWM), six-wave mixing (SWM) and eight-wave mixing processes have been considered in a closed-cycle five-level system. Due to constructive interference of the secondarily-dressed and primarily-dressed excitation pathways, the FWM and SWM signals are greatly enhanced. The dually enhanced FWM channels are opened simultaneously.

Coexistence of four-wave, six-wave and eight-wave mixing processes in multi-dressed atomic systems

Two doubly dressing (parallel and nested processes) schemes are considered which generate co-existing four-wave mixing (FWM), six-wave mixing (SWM) and eight-wave mixing (EWM) processes in an open five-level atomic system. The coherent interaction between two dressing processes in nested type is much stronger than that in parallel type. The singly enhanced SWM and dually enhanced FWM channels can be opened at the same time. Such dramatic enhancements in high-order nonlinear optical processes result from the constructive interactions of double dark resonances. The giant third-, fifth- and seventh-order nonlinear responses with different signs can be obtained by using the coherent phase controls of the polarization beats between the FWM, SWM and EWM signals.

We study the co-existing four-wave mixing (FWM) process with two dressing fields and the six-wave mixing (SWM) process with one dressing field in a five-level system with carefully arranged laser beams. We also show two kinds of doubly dressing mechanisms in the FWM process.FWM and SWM signals propagating along the same direction compete with each other. With the properly controlled dressing fields, the FWM signals can be suppressed, while the SWM signals have been enhanced.

Co-existence of multi-wave mixing in an opening five-level atomic system

Shen Lei-Jian, Yigang Du, Chuangshe Li +6 more

We study the co-existence of multi-wave mixing processes in an open five-level atomic system affected by strong coupling fields. Competition among four-wave mixing (FWM) with two dressing fields, the six-wave mixing (SWM) with one dressing field as well as the eight-wave mixing (EWM) propagating along the same direction can be evoked by adjusting laser beams because these multi-wave mixing signals are induced by atomic coherence between common levels. With the dressing fields properly controlled, the FWM and SWM signals can be suppressed while the EWM signals enhanced in the beam. We also amply analyze the difference between the parallel-cascade and sequentical-cascade doubly dressing mechanisms in doubly-dressed four-wave mixing (DDFWM) processes.

Competition between Dispersion and Absorption of Doubly-Dressed Four-Wave Mixing and Dressed Six-Wave Mixing

Shen Lei-Jian, Chuangshe Li, Yigang Du +6 more

We study the competition between dispersion and absorption of doubly-dressed four-wave mixing (DDFWM) and dressed six-wave mixing. In the case of weak coupling fields limit, we find DDFWM signal is affected by destructive interference between four-wave mixing(FWM) and six-wave mixing as well as constructive interference between FWM and eight-wave mixing. By analysing the difference between two kinds of doubly dressing mechanisms (parallel cascade and nested cascade) in this opening five-level system, we can further understand the generated high-order nonlinear optical signal dressed by multi-fields.

Controlling four-wave and six-wave mixing processes in multilevel atomic systems

Yanpeng Zhang, Utsab Khadka, Blake Anderson +1 more

We experimentally demonstrate that four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) processes can be selectively turned on and off in a close-cycled four-level atomic system. Under certain laser beam configuration, the FWM and SWM processes can be made to coexist with similar signal amplitudes and transmit through the same electromagnetically induced transparency window in such folded four-level atomic system. By introducing an additional pumping laser beam connecting to the fifth energy level, both FWM and SWM signals can be greatly enhanced.

Opening Four-Wave Mixing and Six-Wave Mixing Channels via Dual Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Windows

Yanpeng Zhang, Andy W. Brown, Min Xiao

Highly efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) processes can coexist in a four-level Y-type atomic system due to atomic coherence. The simultaneously opened dual electromagnetically induced transparency windows in this four-level atomic system allow observation of these two nonlinear optical processes at the same time, which enables detailed studies of the interplay between the FWM and SWM processes. Three-photon and five-photon destructive interferences are also observed.
