Equilibrium states of a Bose gas with repulsive interactions

Abstract

Abstract We consider infinite volume limit Gibbs states of a nonrelativistic quantum Bose gas consisting of one species of spinless particles with positive interaction potentials. The finite volume reduced density matrices are dominated by the corresponding matrices for the noninteracting gas, and as a consequence all infinite volume limit states are regular, locally normal, and analytic on the appropriate CCR algebra. For sufficiently short range repulsive two-body interactions, the cyclic vector associated with the limit state is separating for the σ-weak closure of the algebra in the associated representation.

Representations of the Canonical Commutation Relations Describing a Nonrelativistic Infinite Free Bose Gas

H. Araki, E. J. Woods

The existence of inequivalent representations of the canonical commutation relations which describe a nonrelativistic infinite free Bose gas of uniform density is investigated, with a view to possible applications to statistical mechanics. The functional E(f, g)=(Ψ, eiφ(f) eiπ(g)Ψ) is used to describe the inequivalent representations. This functional is calculated for the free Bose gas in a box of volume V, and the limit is then taken as V → ∞. In this way we construct cyclic representations describing an infinite system of particles with a density distribution ρ(k) in momentum space. For a given ρ(k) the operator algebra generated by the φ(f), π(g) is reducible. For the ground-state representation (all particles in the zero-momentum state), the representation is a direct integral of irreducible representations (analogous to BCS theory). For finite temperatures the situation is complicated by the occurrence of representations which are not type I. The physical significance of the reducibility of the representations is discussed. It is argued that the thermal ensemble for the infinite system is a pure state at zero temperature, although there is some ambiguity as to which operators should belong to the algebra of observables. For finite temperatures, the thermal ensemble seems to be a mixture. The case of an interacting Bose gas is considered briefly.

The mean-field limit of quantum Bose gases at positive temperature

Jürg Martin Fröhlich, Antti Knowles, Benjamin Schlein +1 more

We prove that the grand canonical Gibbs state of an interacting quantum Bose gas converges to the Gibbs measure of a nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the mean-field limit, where the density of the gas becomes large and the interaction strength is proportional to the inverse density. Our results hold in dimensions d ⩽ 3 d \leqslant 3 . For d > 1 d > 1 the Gibbs measure is supported on distributions of negative regularity and we have to renormalize the interaction. More precisely, we prove the convergence of the relative partition function and of the reduced density matrices in the L r L^r -norm with optimal exponent r r . Moreover, we prove the convergence in the L ∞ L^\infty -norm of Wick-ordered reduced density matrices, which allows us to control correlations of Wick-ordered particle densities as well as the asymptotic distribution of the particle number. Our proof is based on a functional integral representation of the grand canonical Gibbs state, in which convergence to the mean-field limit follows formally from an infinite-dimensional stationary phase argument for ill-defined non-Gaussian measures. We make this argument rigorous by introducing a white-noise-type auxiliary field, through which the functional integral is expressed in terms of propagators of heat equations driven by time-dependent periodic random potentials and can, in turn, be expressed as a gas of interacting Brownian loops and paths. When the gas is confined by an external trapping potential, we control the decay of the reduced density matrices using excursion probabilities of Brownian bridges.

Second Order Expansion of Gibbs State Reduced Density Matrices in the Gross–Pitaevskii Regime

Christian Brennecke, Jinyeop Lee, Phan Thành Nam

Abstract. We consider a translation-invariant system of [Formula: see text] bosons in [Formula: see text] that interact through a repulsive two-body potential with scattering length of order [Formula: see text] in the limit [Formula: see text]. We derive second order expressions for the one- and two-particle reduced density matrix matrices of the Gibbs state at fixed positive temperatures, thus obtaining a justification of Bogoliubov’s prediction on the fluctuations around the condensate.

FK-DLR properties of a quantum multi-type Bose-gas with a repulsive interaction

Yu. M. Suhov, I. Stuhl

The paper extends earlier results from Suhov and Kelbert [“FK-DLR states of a quantum Bose-gas with a hardcore interaction,” arXiv:1304.0782] and Suhov et al. [“Shift-invariance for FK-DLR states of a 2D quantum Bose-gas,” arXiv:1304.4177] about infinite-volume quantum bosonic states (FK-DLR states) to the case of multi-type particles with non-negative interactions. (An example is a quantum Widom–Rowlinson model.) Following the strategy from Suhov and Kelbert and Suhov et al., we establish that, for the values of fugacity z ∈ (0, 1) and inverse temperature β > 0, finite-volume Gibbs states form a compact family in the thermodynamic limit. Next, in dimension two we show that any limit-point state (an FK-DLR state in the terminology adopted in Suhov and Kelbert and Suhov et al.) is translation-invariant.

The Feynman–Kac Representation and Dobrushin–Lanford–Ruelle States of a Quantum Bose-Gas

Yuri Suhov, Mark Kelbert, Izabella Stuhl

This paper focuses on infinite-volume bosonic states for a quantum particle system (a quantum gas) in Rd. The kinetic energy part of the Hamiltonian is the standard Laplacian (with a boundary condition at the border of a ‘box’). The particles interact with each other through a two-body finite-range potential depending on the distance between them and featuring a hard core of diameter a>0. We introduce a class of so-called FK-DLR functionals containing all limiting Gibbs states of the system. As a justification of this concept, we prove that for d=2, any FK-DLR functional is shift-invariant, regardless of whether it is unique or not. This yields a quantum analog of results previously achieved by Richthammer.
