Abstract

The authors have developed a high-impedance Josephson-type microwave detector and a practical microwave video detection system using a small Stirling refrigerator. The detector was fabricated from a newly developed YBCO-BiO composite superconductor prepared by doping YBCO with Bi/sub 2/O/sub 3/. The I-V response of the detector showed enhanced mode detection under microwave irradiation. A measured responsivity of more than 180 V/W was obtained at 58 K.>

Mixing characteristics of a microwave detector using a granular YBCO superconductor

Yorinobu Yoshisato, Minoru Takai, Kazuya Niki +3 more

Microbridge-type Josephson junctions made of granular bulk YBCO superconductors were experimentally studied at microwave frequencies. Although the bridge included many grain boundaries, clear Shapiro steps were induced at every hf/2e voltage for microwave frequencies, and step height dependence for microwave power similar to that of a single weak link bridge was observed. A heterodyne mixing experiment of microwaves at about 20 GHz was also performed using the detector. The IF signal showed peak amplitudes corresponding to the peak dynamic resistance due to nonlinearity resulting from the Josephson effect. It was confirmed that the detector operates stably for the Josephson-effect heterodyne mixer at 60 K or below. The detector has potential for high sensitivity and good impedance matching due to its large dynamic resistance and high normal state resistance, respectively.

Heterodyne Detection of Microwaves Using Granular-Type Y1Ba2Cu3O7-x Superconductors

A heterodyne mixing experiment of microwaves at about 20 GHz was performed using a microwave detector made from granular-type Y1Ba2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) superconductors. Although the bridge included many boundaries, voltage steps corresponding to the Josephson frequency and step height dependence for microwave power similar to those of a single weak-link bridge were clearly observed. The IF signal showed peak amplitudes corresponding to the peak dynamic resistantance due to nonlinearity resulting from the Josephson effect. It was confirmed for the first time that this detector operates stably for the heterodyne mixer at 60 K or below and has a potential for high sensitivity due to its large dynamic resistance.

YBCO microwave grain boundary mixer using a SrTiO/sub 3/ bicrystal substrate

R. Seed, Paul C. Dorsey, Hoton How +2 more

A microwave mixer was patterned on a microstrip transmission line of superconducting YBCO (YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-x/). The YBCO film was epitaxially laser deposited on a SrTiO/sub 3/ bicrystal substrate. A weak link was constructed by patterning a microbridge in the microstrip at the bicrystal boundary. Microwave signals at 9.000 GHz and 9.941 GHz were applied at the input of the microstrip line. An output intermediate frequency signal was observed at 941 MHz and was detected as the transmitted signal. The microbridge junction, which behaved as a resistively shunted Josephson junction (RSJ), was current biased slightly above the critical current I/sub c/. The mixer conversion loss was measured at the input and output ports of the device package. The mixing efficiency was determined at the device junction. This efficiency was compared with the calculated efficiency determined by numerical solution of the Josephson equation for the weak link junction.>

Microwave detection and mixing in Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films at liquid-nitrogen temperatures

Janusz Konopka, Roman Sobolewski, Anna Konopka +1 more

Microwave properties of an Y-Ba-Cu-O microstrip detector have been studied at 24 GHz frequency band at the liquid-nitrogen temperature. The amplitude of the video detection signal was found to be proportional to the incident microwave power. Direct mixing action was also demonstrated, setting the upper limit for the film response time as short as 40 ps. Occurrence of microwave mixing in the absence of dc current bias was observed, suggesting the presence of the inverse Josephson effect. Physical properties of the detector response were very similar to the enhanced mode of detection, characteristic for granular superconducting films.

Small-signal microwave impedance measurements of a superconducting thin-film microbridge

P W Forder, John Ryder Waldram

Measurements at 3 GHz of the microwave properties of a superconducting thin-film microbridge coupled to a narrowly tuned strip-line resonator (coupled Q approximately 10 3 ) indicate that such a device displays the same variations in small-signal impedance as predicted by the resistively shunted junction model of a Josephson weak-link. Whenever this impedance becomes negative the microbridge is found to generate microwave radiation whose frequency is determined not by the junction bias voltage but by the natural resonance of the strip-line.

Microwave detection using Josephson junction arrays integrated in a resonator

O.M. Ivanyuta, Oleksandr V. Prokopenko, V.M. Raksha +1 more

The possibilities and physical mechanisms of detection of microwave X- and Ka-band radiation by high-temperature superconducting (HTS) YBa2Cu3O7-0.05 (YBCO) bicrystalline Josephson junctions (JJ) embedded in a surface wave resonator (SWR) are considered. Microwave detection was investigated experimentally by using a linear Josephson junction array (JJA) embedded in the SWR. Measurements were carried out starting from the critical temperature of HTS film (T = 92 K), down to the liquid nitrogen level (T = 77 K) and beyond (down to 20 K) using the Gifford-McMahon closed-cycle cryo-cooler. The sensitivity of such type of detectors was determined to be approximately 104 V/W. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
