Abstract

We have observed two-photon interference behind Youngpsilas double slit with unprecedented signal/noise ratiopsilas. We demonstrate the complementarity between quantum entanglement in the two-photon field and optical coherence in the projected one-photon field for three different types of illumination: far-field, near-field, and intermediate illumination.

Demonstration of the complementarity of one- and two-photon interference

Ayman F. Abouraddy, Magued B. Nasr, Bahaa E. A. Saleh +2 more

The visibilities of second-order (one-photon) and fourth-order (two-photon) interference have been observed in a Young's double-slit experiment using light generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion and a photon-counting intensified charge-coupled device camera. Coherence and entanglement underlie one- and two-photon interference, respectively. As the effective source size is increased, coherence is diminished while entanglement is enhanced, so that the visibility of one-photon interference decreases while that of two-photon interference increases. This experiment demonstrates the complementarity between one- and two-photon interference (coherence and entanglement) in the spatial domain.

Engineering of two-photon spatial quantum correlations behind a double slit

Wouter H. J. Peeters, J. J. Renema, Martin P. van Exter

This paper demonstrates the engineering of spatially entangled two-photon states behind a double slit by tailoring the incident pure two-photon state. We experimentally characterize many different two-photon states by measuring their complete two-photon interference patterns in the far field of the double slit. Spatial entanglement right behind the double slit can reside in either the modulus or the phase of the two-photon field. The balance between these two types of entanglement is fully controlled by experimentally utilizing the phase-front curvatures of the pump beam and the phase-matching profile. We project either a far-field image or a magnified near-field image of the two-photon source onto the double slit. Our theoretical analysis shows how the two-photon interference pattern behind the double slit effectively acts as a phase-sensitive probe of the incident two-photon field profile. We thus present phase-sensitive measurements of the generated two-photon field profile probed in an image plane of the two-photon source.

Observation of Young's Double-Slit Interference with the Three-photon N00N state

Yong‐Su Kim, Osung Kwon, Sang Min Lee +4 more

We report the first experimental observation of a three-photon N00N state exhibiting Young’s double-slit type spatial quantum interference. Compared to a single-photon state, the three-photon entangled state generates interference fringes that are three times denser.

Observation of Young’s double-slit interference with the three-photon N00N state

Yong‐Su Kim, Osung Kwon, Sang Min Lee +5 more

Spatial interference of quantum mechanical particles exhibits a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics. A two-mode entangled state of N particles known as N00N state can give rise to non-classical interference. We report the first experimental observation of a three-photon N00N state exhibiting Young's double-slit type spatial quantum interference. Compared to a single-photon state, the three-photon entangled state generates interference fringes that are three times denser. Moreover, its interference visibility of 0.49 ± 0.09 is well above the limit of 0.1 for spatial super-resolution of classical origin.

Two-photon interference : spatial aspects of two-photon entanglement, diffraction, and scattering

Wouter H. J. Peeters

This dissertation contains scientific research within the realm of quantum optics, which is a branch of physics. An experimental and theoretical study is made of two-photon interference phenomena in various optical systems. Spatially entangled photon pairs are produced via the nonlinear optical process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. These entangled photons are then passed through different optical systems to study various aspects of two-photon interference. Firstly, an experimental analysis is made of the high-dimensional entanglement that is present in the orbital angular momentum of the photons. Secondly, we present a comprehensive description of two-photon quantum interference behind a double slit. We demonstrate how to control the quantum correlations and present the first observations of complete two-photon diffraction patterns behind a double slit. Finally, we present pioneering experiments on spatially entangled two-photon states that are scattered of random media. We have observed and theoretically analyzed the structure in the random two-photon interference patterns called two-photon speckle patterns. Spatial entanglement gives two-photon speckle a much richer structure than ordinary one-photon speckle. Our experiments also demonstrate a two-photon interference phenomenon that survives averaging over different realizations of disorder. The latter results are closely related to bosonic, fermionic, and anyonic particle exchange symmetries.

Young’s double-slit interference with two-color biphotons

Dejian Zhang, Shuang Wu, Hong-Guo Li +3 more

In classical optics, Young's double-slit experiment with colored coherent light gives rise to individual interference fringes for each light frequency, referring to single-photon interference. However, two-photon double-slit interference has been widely studied only for wavelength-degenerate biphoton, known as subwavelength quantum lithography. In this work, we report double-slit interference experiments with two-color biphoton. Different from the degenerate case, the experimental results depend on the measurement methods. From a two-axis coincidence measurement pattern we can extract complete interference information about two colors. The conceptual model provides an intuitional picture of the in-phase and out-of-phase photon correlations and a complete quantum understanding about the which-path information of two colored photons.
