Stochastic characterization of amplified photons in lightwave systems with optically bistable elements

Abstract

An optical amplifier followed by a bistable element is statistically analyzed. To this end, the birth-death-immigration model and the coupled mode theory are used to characterize the amplifier and the bistable element, respectively.

An optical amplifier followed by a bistable element has been statistically analyzed before. In this manuscript, output noise analysis represents, then signal to noise ratios (SNR) are calculated either for input or output. It will be shown that noise reduction, can be achieved by a proper selection of parameters.

Evolution of the statistical properties of photons passed through a traveling-wave laser amplifier

Paul Diament, Malvin Carl Teich

The authors determine the evolution of the photon statistics of a light beam as it passes through a traveling-wave laser amplifier, modeled as a birth-death immigration (BDI) medium. The relationship between the input and output probability distributions and probability generating functions with given (but possibly varying) birth, death, and immigration rates for arbitrary input statistics is obtained. The case of constant birth, death, and immigration rates is considered in particular detail. The photon statistics at the output of a general BDI traveling-wave amplifier are always broader than those at the input, and they can take many forms. The most general solution can be applied when the input distribution to the amplifier takes the form of a negative-binomial transform.>

Stochastic-master-equation description of an optical bistability: A comparison with the microscopic theory

Robert F. Gragg, William C. Schieve, Adi R. Bulsara

We consider a gas of homogeneously broadened two-level atoms in a Fabry-Perot cavity injected with a coherent resonant electric field. Adopting a macroscopic birth-death description, we construct a stochastic master equation for the output intensity distribution. From this starting point we find the steady-state distribution and show it to be bimodal in the region of the optical bistability. We compare our results for the mean and variance with the microscopic results of Bonifacio, Gronchi, and Lugiato as a test of the stochastic-master-equation approach.
