The Squeezing Spectrum in Optical Bistability

L. A. Lugiato, M. Vadacchino, F. Castelli

We study the spectrum of squeezing in the light transmitted by a system of two-level atoms in an optical cavity driven by a coherent field, as recently observed by Kimble and collaborators. Our analysis does not introduce any restriction on the detuning parameters or on the relative order of magnitude of the atomic and cavity relaxation rates. Using the dressed-mode formalism, we derive explicit analytic expressions for the spectrum of squeezing and for the second-order intensity correlation function. We describe how the spectrum depends on the various parameters of the system; this study provides general indications on how to optimize the conditions to observe squeezing in optical bistability. A special attention is devoted to the changes of the spectrum under variation of the detuning parameters or on the ratio of cavity to atomic damping rate. In all cases, the changes are continuous and smooth, with quantitative variations in the level of squeezing. This indicates the existence of a single avenue to squeezing in this system. The bad-cavity direction is identified as especially convenient to obtain a significant amount of squeezing.

OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN A DEGENERATE TWO-LEVEL EIT MEDIUM UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF AN EXTERNAL MAGNETIC FIELD: AN ANALYTICAL APPROACH

Le Thi Minh Phuong, Dinh Xuan Khoa, Nguyen Huy Bang +4 more

We investigate the behavior of optical bistability in a degenerate two-level atomic medium using an external magnetic field to separate the lower level into two distinct levels that both connect to an upper level by the probe and coupling laser fields. Based on analytical solutions, the absorption spectrum and behavior of optical bistability in an electromagnetically induced transparency regime under an external magnetic field are investigated. By controlling the external magnetic field, we find that the appearance and disappearance of the optical bistability can be easily controlled according to the strength of the magnetic field in the transparent window domain. Furthermore, the effects of the intensity of the coupling laser field and the parameters of the system on the behavior of optical bistability are also considered. The proposed model is useful for applications in all-optical switches and magneto-optic storage devices.

TRANSVERSE FIELD AND INHOMOGENEOUS BROADENING EFFECTS ON OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN MIXED SPECIES

Mona Ali, S. M. A. Maize, M. A. El-Deberky

The steady state behavior of a bistable system of a homogeneously or inhomogeneously broadened two sorts of two-level atoms placed in a ring cavity and driven by a coherent field is analyzed within the mean field limit where the transverse effect of the radiation field is taken into account within the single-transverse-mode model. Effects on the input–output relation, due to the transverse parameter and the Lorentzian and the Gaussian line widths which measure the inhomogeneous broadening of the atoms, are examined. The enlargement of the optical bistable (tristable) region according to the previously mentioned parameters is explained.
