Effects of Spatial Distributivity in Semiconductor Optical Bistable Systems

Abstract

Abstract Results are presented of a theoretical analysis of transverse and longitudinal distributivity effects in semiconductor optical bistable systems. For a resonatorless increasing absorption bistable system the kinetics of autopulsations (resulting from the formation of moving absorption domains) are described. For wideaperture nonlinear interferometers new types of field spatial structures are shown: immovable and moving autosolitons, waves of automodulation and autostochasticity, and pulsing distributions.

Transverse effects in increasing absorption optical bistability

Theoretical modeling of increasing absorption optical bistability in thin semiconductors has predicted the appearance of transverse spatial rings in the transmitted intensity profiles of an incident Gaussian laser beam.1 The formation of this ring is due to nonuniform switching of the semiconductor in response to the varying beam profile.

Optical Bistability and Formation of Localized and Moving High Absorption Domains in ZnSe and ZnCdS

Sergei E. Esipov, V. A. Stadnik

Abstract Results are given of the experimental study of increasing absorption optical bistability that arises from the formation of high absorption domains in bulk ZnSe and ZnCdS. A periodic domain motion causes output signal pulsations. The average domain velocity proved to be about 102 cm/s. A model that describes the behaviour of the absorption domain in semiconductors is discussed. Results of the experimental study of the domain behaviour are explained by the heat conduction regime of the model.

Resonatorless Optical Bistability Based on Increasing Nonlinear Absorption

F. Hennebeger, H. Rossmann

Abstract A new type of optical bistability is presented. Instead of a resonator the intrinsic feedback between the optical excitation of carriers and their recombination is used. Optical bistability appears, if the absorption coefficient increases with growing carrier density. Both propagation effects and carrier diffusion are considered. Analytical model calculations are carried out for an abrupt behaviour of the absorption coefficient. The results explain the hysteresis in the transmittivity of CdS, recently observed.

Spatial Structures in Semiconductor Devices

W. J. Firth, Angus Lord

The basic physics of nonlinear optics in semiconductors is reviewed. Optical bistability due to increasing absorption and in a Kerr cavity is discussed, as are spatial solitons in a Kerr medium. These introduce recent research on spontaneous pattern formation and soliton-like structures in semiconductor cavity models. Applications to optical information processing are discussed, and simulations of a soliton array memory presented.
