Abstract

We report the phase measurement of a fast light pulse in electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) of the 5S₁/₂ (F = 2)-5P₃/₂ (F' = 3) transition of ⁸⁷Rb atoms. Using a beat-note interferometer method, a stable measurement without phase dithering of the phase of the probe pulse before and after it has passed through the EIA medium was achieved. Comparing the phases of the light pulse in air and that of the fast light pulse though the EIA medium, the phase of the fast light pulse at EIA resonance was not shifted and maintained to be the same as that of the free-space light pulse. The classical fidelity of the fast light pulse according to the advancement of the group velocity by adjusting the atomic density was estimated to be more than 97%.

Intensity correlation and anti-correlation in electromagnetically induced absorption

Hee Jung Lee, Han Seb Moon

We present measurements of the intensity fluctuations of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in the 5S₁/₂ (F = 2)-5P₃/₂(F' = 3) transition of ⁸⁷Rb atoms. Using a linearly polarized laser, the intensity fluctuations between two circularly polarized light components was generated by the spontaneously transferred atomic coherence of EIA medium. The intensity fluctuations due to spontaneous transfer of coherence were changed from correlation of EIA at on-resonance to anti-correlation of EIA at off-resonance. We also investigated the dependence of the values of second-order correlation function g(²)(0) at zero delay time on the temperature of the atomic vapor cell and the incident laser power.

Beat-note interferometer for direct phase measurement of photonic information

Yong‐Fan Chen, Yuchen Liu, Zen-Hsiang Tsai +2 more

We describe a simple method of the beat-note interferometer that directly and dynamically measures the phase shift of light pulses induced by highly dispersive samples. Using the method, we show intuitively that the storage and retrieval of light pulses in a medium due to the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency is a coherent process and, quantitatively, that there is no observable phase shift caused by the process. This method is sensitive enough that it can be used to measure the phase of a light pulse with energy on the order of a dozen photons.

Spatial transport of atomic coherence in electromagnetically induced absorption with a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell

Yoon‐Seok Lee, Han Seb Moon

We report the spatial transport of spontaneously transferred atomic coherence (STAC) in electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA), which resulted from moving atoms with the STAC of the 5S(1/2) (F = 2)-5P(3/2) (F' = 3) transition of (87)Rb in a paraffin-coated vapor cell. In our experiment, two channels were spatially separate; the writing channel (WC) generated STAC in the EIA configuration, and the reading channel (RC) retrieved the optical field from the spatially transported STAC. Transported between the spatially separated positions, the fast light pulse of EIA in the WC and the delayed light pulse in the RC were observed. When the laser direction of the RC was counter-propagated in the direction of the WC, we observed direction reversal of the transported light pulse in the EIA medium. Furthermore, the delay time, the magnitude, and the width of the spatially transported light pulse were investigated with respect to the distance between the two channels.

Experimental Investigation on Slow Light and Optical Pulse Propagation with Negative Group Velocity in the Electromagnetically Induced Medium

Zhang Yu

In this paper we report that we observed slow light of the optical pulse in the EIT medium and superluminal phenomena or negative group velocity of the pulse in the EIA medium, the speed of light in EIT medium was c/30000 and the speed of light in EIA was - c/3000. EIT and EIA was observed in Zeeman hyperfine structure system of cesium atoms.

Heterodyne measurements of dispersion in electromagnetically induced absorption

Liang-Hong Mo, K. Danzmann

The dispersive and absorptive features of a closed transition in atomic cesium are investigated by means of a heterodyne interferometer as a function of the powers of probe and pump laser. Coherent population trapping (CPT) phenomena have raised the interest of the community in recent years. Possible applications of such effects are in the field of slow light propagation and, on the other side, superluminal effects. In particular, special interest has been devoted to the investigation of the refractive index of coherently prepared atoms. The goal of this investigation is the design of new optical media which show either negative or positive dispersion without absorption or with increased anomalous absorption. Such media could be useful ui building white light cavities, opto-optical modulators, and in quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements which are crucial to the development of the future generations gravitational wave detectors. Among these coherency processes we have been studying the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) (2) in a closed transition in cesiumatoms. The transition under analysis was the 'CS DZ line at 852 nm, in particular the hyperfine transition 6s zS~/2 F=4 + 6p 2P~/2 F'=5. The system was analyzed by means of a three beam heterodyne interferometer (l). This experimental setup shows high sensitivity to phase measurements and strongly reduced sensitivity to acoustical or vibrational noise. Using a third reference laser which does not interact with the mediumone can perform simultaneous measurements of the phase shift and the absorption of either the probe or the pump laser. The dispersion and the absorption of probe and coupling lasers have been measured as a funcion of the power of the coupling and probe lasers themselves. The power of the lasers are changed in the range of several decades. The halfwidth of the EL4 signal shows an increase with respect to the power of the probe laser while the phase shift of the probe laser decreases. The possibility to extend EIA measurements to a closed four level system in cesium is under analysis and is discussed here. Such possible developments of the experimental setup using a fourth laser or modulating the present reference laser enhance the capability to exploit simultaneous measurements of dispersion and absorption even in the four level system. Investigation of Electromagnetically Induced Absorption

Fangyi Liu

Electromagnetically induced absorption(EIA) is an intriguing phenomenon of light-atom interaction. The study of its nonlinear behaviors has theoretical significance and potential applications. On the basis of the researches of degenerate two-level system,N-type four-level system and quasi degenerate N-type level system, the forming mechanism and creating conditions of EIA are given. The result that destructive interference of atomic coherence leads to electromagnetically induced absorption is shown.Furthermore, the dramatic change of dispersion line in the corresponding frequency occurs in the anomalous dispersion, which can be used to realize speeding up of the light group velocity or negative group velocity. The applications of EIA are being further studied.
