Abstract

In this paper we report that we observed slow light of the optical pulse in the EIT medium and superluminal phenomena or negative group velocity of the pulse in the EIA medium, the speed of light in EIT medium was c/30000 and the speed of light in EIA was - c/3000. EIT and EIA was observed in Zeeman hyperfine structure system of cesium atoms.

Analysis of the Slow Speed of Light and Ultrafast Light Path to Achieve

Xiaoli Li

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) technology can be used to achieve slow speed of light corresponding to normal dispersion (d n/d ω0 or d ng/d ω0),and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA)can be used to achieve ultrafast light or even negative group velocity of light corresponding to anomalous dispersion (d n/d ω0 or d ng /d ω0. The study of ultraslow light and ultrafast light is of interest in the research of the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, electronics and the theory of information.

Abnormal EM-waves Propagation in Passive Media

Huang Zhi-xun

Recently, there has been interest in modifying the group velocity of optical pulses, resulting in stopped, slow, and fast(superluminal)light.According to the physical theory, fast appears in the anomalous medium, and then it so called light medium. There are many experimeuts to produce fast light, this situation opens up new perspectives for the so called dispersion engineering. For example, signal propagating with a group velocity that exceeds the speed of light in vacuum(c) is intriguing for scientists. And then, the traveling of short wave pulses, microwave pulses and light pulses with group velocity vg,whose values exceed infinity,so called negative group velocity(NGV) propagation.Such circumstance occurs when the peak of a pulse traveling through DUT,exits before the peak of the input pulse has reached the beginning of DUT.This effect is counterintuitive, but it is a discover under the experimental basis. When the group velocity of light in a material is negative,it is the NGV medium. Although NGV are possible particularly in gain systems, there have been some experimental demonstrations of that phenomenon in passive systems, such as the coaxial cables,waveguides,micro-strip lines, and optical fibers, etc. If the experimental configuration used with a higher impedance mismatch, then it permits larger group delays, and a corresponding NGV.If n is the effective refraction index of the medium,we wantfn |f/ndn/df|1 to obtain the NGV. Many experiments showed the group velocity can surpass the light speed c,but scientists still lack the further understanding of the results. In 2001,Scientists obtained the formula v-e=|T|2vg,where v-e is average energy velocity,T is transmission coeficient of the system. If we want v-ec,the condition is vgc|T|-2.Hence it can be concluded that only vg/c is very large, the energy velocity can surpass c.This demonstration opens the door to interesting possibilities. The definition of signal velocity by Brillouin, mathemalical meaning exceeds physical meaning. We argue that undistorted wave group(wave packet) propagation are the first consideration.According to this viewpoint, the theoretical analysis show that superluminal propagation(i.e.superluminal communication) was observed by authors of many NGV researchers.……The superluminal group velocity wave propagation, the negative group velocity wave propagation——each of the two cases has its own use. Now,scientists do research works in these fields: such as optical communication, squeezed light and quantum entanglement. The condusion tell us that,a hight efficiency and low-loss fast light scheme may explore potential applications.

Optical propagation with slow and negative group velocity in Rb vapor

S. Barreiro, A. Lipsich, A. Lezama +1 more

Summary form only given. The propagation of light in a dispersive medium is characterized by the group velocity /spl nu//sub g/=c(n+/spl nu//sup dn//d/spl nu/)/sup .1/ where n is the refractive index and /spl nu/ the optical frequency. Depending on the sign and magnitude of /sup dn//d/spl nu/ in the medium, the group velocity can be positive, infinite or negative. The group velocity corresponds to the speed of the propagation of the maximum of an optical pulse travelling into the medium. This remains true whether the dispersion in the medium is normal (/sup dn//d/spl nu/>0) or anomalous (/sup dn//d/spl nu/<0). It has been demonstrated that coherently prepared atomic systems can exhibit steep dispersion leading to small absolute values of the group velocity (slow light). In recent work, we have demonstrated that narrow resonances arising from the coherent interaction of two optical fields with a closed atomic transition between two degenerate levels may correspond to a steep anomalous dispersion and thus to slow and negative group velocity. We report on the experimental study of the propagation of an amplitude modulated wave in a medium presenting negative group velocity.

Slow light with cavity electromagnetically induced transparency

Jiepeng Zhang, Gessler Hernandez, Yifu Zhu

We report an experimental observation of slow light propagation in cold Rb atoms exhibiting cavity electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The steep slope of the atomic dispersion manifested by EIT reduces the light group velocity. The cavity filtering and feedback further contribute to the slowdown and delay of the light pulse propagation. A combination of the cavity and the EIT atomic system significantly improves the performance of the slow light propagation. A propagation time delay of approximately 200 ns was observed in the cavity and Rb EIT system, which is approximately 70 times greater than the time delay calculated for the light pulse propagation through the same Rb EIT system without the cavity.

Superluminal and slow light propagation in cold atoms

Hoonsoo Kang, Gessler Hernandez, Yifu Zhu

The group velocity of a light pulse propagating through a four-level system exhibiting electromagnetically induced transparency can be manipulated by a pump laser. The pump laser induces the large optical nonlinearities with steep normal or anomalous dispersion. We present experimental measurements that demonstrate both slow and superluminal light propagation in cold Rb atoms.

First observation of ultraslow group velocity of light in a solid

Alexey V. Turukhin, Venkatapura S. Sudarshanam, M. S. Shahriar +2 more

Summary form only given. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been the subject of many experimental and theoretical studies over recent years. Most recently, substantial experimental and theoretical work in this area has been focused on the use of EIT to give ultraslow group velocities for light in both ultracold atomic gas and hot atomic vapors. Much of this interest is based on the fact that slowing the group velocity of a laser pulse down to the speed of sound in the same material can produce strong coupling between acoustic waves and the electromagnetic field. It has been suggested that a giant nonlinearity obtained by this method might be utilized for efficient multi-wave mixing and quantum nondemolition measurements. Slow light might also allow a very efficient nonlinear interaction between laser pulses of extremely low (down to a single photon) energies. Here, we report the first direct observation of an ultraslow group velocity of light down to 45 m/s in a solid, well below the speed of sound in the medium. This group velocity is fundamentally limited only by the inhomogeneous broadening of the ground state transition. At low coupling beam intensities, the fraction of centers that are pumped into the "dark state" increases with coupling laser power, so that the observed group delay is increasing with coupling beam intensity. At higher intensities, power broadening reduces the sharpness of the dispersive feature and the observed group delay decreases.
