Classical solitons for a one-dimensional many-body system with inverse-square interaction

Bill Sutherland, Joel F. Campbell

We investigate solitons in the one-dimensional classical many-body system of particles interacting by an inverse-square pair potential. We use a combination of numerical results for finite systems, and exact results for the continuum limit, to deduce properties of solitons in the thermodynamic limit. Two remarkable conjectures are supported by these results, and the correspondence with the exact results for the quantum system is established.

Density functional theory of one-dimensional two-particle systems

H. L. Neal

We consider the density functional theory from the point of view of one-dimensional two-particle systems, where the particles are either spin-1/2 fermions or spin-0 bosons. The basic equations are derived and applied to the system of two coupled harmonic oscillators. An exact density functional solution is constructed from the exactly known single-particle density for this system. We demonstrate how this solution may be applied to other two-particle systems to calculate the exact single-particle density and energy.

Exact few-body results for strongly correlated quantum gases in two dimensions

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu, P. D. Drummond

The study of strongly correlated quantum gases in two dimensions has important ramifications for understanding many intriguing phenomena in solid materials, such as high-${T}_{c}$ superconductivity and the fractional quantum-Hall effect. However, theoretical methods are plagued by the existence of significant quantum fluctuations. Here, we present two- and three-body exact solutions for both fermions and bosons trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential with an arbitrary $s$-wave scattering length. These few-particle solutions link in a natural way to the high-temperature properties of many-particle systems via a quantum virial expansion. As a concrete example, using the energy spectrum of few fermions, we calculate the second and third virial coefficients of a strongly interacting Fermi gas in two dimensions, and consequently investigate its high-temperature thermodynamics. Our thermodynamic results may be useful for ongoing experiments on two-dimensional Fermi gases. These exact results also provide an unbiased benchmark for quantum Monte Carlo simulations of two-dimensional Fermi gases at high temperatures.

The study of strongly correlated quantum gases in two dimensions has important ramifications for understanding many intriguing phenomena in solid materials, such as high-Tc{T}_{c}Tc superconductivity and the fractional quantum-Hall effect. However, theoretical methods are plagued by the existence of significant quantum fluctuations. Here, we present two- and three-body exact solutions for both fermions and bosons trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential with an arbitrary sss-wave scattering length.
