Density functional theory of one-dimensional two-particle systems

Abstract

We consider the density functional theory from the point of view of one-dimensional two-particle systems, where the particles are either spin-1/2 fermions or spin-0 bosons. The basic equations are derived and applied to the system of two coupled harmonic oscillators. An exact density functional solution is constructed from the exactly known single-particle density for this system. We demonstrate how this solution may be applied to other two-particle systems to calculate the exact single-particle density and energy.

Density-matrix functional theory of strongly correlated lattice fermions

Román López-Sandoval, G. M. Pastor

A density-functional theory (DFT) of lattice fermion models is presented, which uses the single-particle density matrix ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}$ as basic variable. A simple, explicit approximation to the interaction-energy functional $W[\ensuremath{\gamma}]$ of the Hubbard model is derived from exact dimer results, scaling properties of $W[\ensuremath{\gamma}]$ and known limits. Systematic tests on the one-dimensional chain show a remarkable agreement with the Bethe-ansatz exact solution for all interaction regimes and band fillings. New results are obtained for the ground-state energy and charge-excitation gap in two dimensions. A successful description of strong electron correlations within DFT is achieved.

Exact single-particle kinetic energy functional for general two-level and modeln-level one-dimensional systems: Dependence only on electron density and its gradient

Pawel Michal Kozlowski, N. H. March

From the explicit solution of a two-level problem previously obtained, it is proved that the single-particle kinetic energy density functional ${t}_{s}$[\ensuremath{\rho}] is the density \ensuremath{\rho} times a function solely of the ratio \ensuremath{\rho}'/\ensuremath{\rho}, with \ensuremath{\rho}' the first derivative of \ensuremath{\rho}. For an n-level system with a harmonic-oscillator potential, the form of ${t}_{s}$[\ensuremath{\rho}] is explicitly obtained. Again ${t}_{s}$[\ensuremath{\rho}] involves only \ensuremath{\rho} and \ensuremath{\rho}'; no higher derivatives appear.

Two-component Fermi gas in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Gao Xianlong, W. Wonneberger

A many-body theory for a two-component system of spin-polarized interacting fermions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is developed. The model considers two different states of the same fermionic species and treats the dominant interactions between the two using the bosonization method for forward scattering. Asymptotically exact results for the one-particle matrix elements at zero temperature are given. Using them, occupation probabilities of oscillator states are discussed. Particle and momentum densities are calculated and displayed. It is demonstrated how interactions modify all these quantities. An asymptotic connection with Luttinger liquids is suggested. The relation of the coupling constant of the theory to the dipole-dipole interaction is also discussed.

Density-matrix functional theory of the Hubbard model: An exact numerical study

Román López-Sandoval, G. M. Pastor

A density-functional theory for many-body lattice models is considered in which the single-particle density matrix ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}$ is the basic variable. Eigenvalue equations are derived for solving Levy's constrained search of the interaction energy functional $W[{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}].$ $W[{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}]$ is expressed as the sum of Hartree-Fock energy ${E}_{\mathrm{HF}}[{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}]$ and the correlation energy ${E}_{C}[{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}].$ Exact results are obtained for ${E}_{C}({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12})$ of the Hubbard model on various periodic lattices, where ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}={\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}$ for all nearest neighbors i and j. The functional dependence of ${E}_{C}({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12})$ is analyzed by varying the number of sites ${N}_{a},$ band filling ${N}_{e},$ and lattice structure. The infinite one-dimensional chain and one-, two-, or three-dimensional finite clusters with periodic boundary conditions are considered. The properties of ${E}_{C}({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12})$ are discussed in the limits of weak $({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}\ensuremath{\simeq}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}^{0})$ and strong $({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}\ensuremath{\simeq}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}^{\ensuremath{\infty}})$ electronic correlations, and in the crossover region $({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}^{\ensuremath{\infty}}<~{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}<~{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}^{0}).$ Using an appropriate scaling we observe that ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{C}{(g}_{12}{)=E}_{C}{/E}_{\mathrm{HF}}$ has a pseudo-universal behavior as a function of ${g}_{12}=({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}^{\ensuremath{\infty}})/({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}^{0}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}^{\ensuremath{\infty}}).$ The fact that ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{C}{(g}_{12})$ depends weakly on ${N}_{a},$ ${N}_{e},$ and lattice structure suggests that the correlation energy of extended systems could be obtained quite accurately from finite-cluster calculations. Finally, the behaviors of ${E}_{C}({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12})$ for repulsive $(U>0)$ and attractive $(U<0)$ interactions are contrasted.

One-Dimensional Many-Fermion System. I: Exact Solution in a Field Theoretical Framework

T. Kebukawa

The eigenvalue problem in a one-dimensional system of many fermions interacting via a delta-function potential is solved exactly in a field theoretical framework. Simultaneous eigenstates of spin and energy are represented in a systematic and compact form, that is, in such a form that the orbital and spin eigenfunctions are unified in harmony without the aid of Young’s tableau. The eigenstate and energy eigenvalue are specified by two sets of quantum numbers, particle momenta and spin momenta, besides two eigenvalues of a total spin angular momentum and its z-component. It is shown that for given particle momenta and spin momenta the energy eigenvalue is given by the solutions of coupled equations.

Interaction-energy functional for lattice density functional theory: Applications to one-, two-, and three-dimensional Hubbard models

Román López-Sandoval, G. M. Pastor

The Hubbard model is investigated in the framework of lattice density functional theory (LDFT). The single-particle density matrix ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}$ with respect to the lattice sites is considered as the basic variable of the many-body problem. A new approximation to the interaction-energy functional $W[\ensuremath{\gamma}]$ is proposed which is based on its scaling properties and which recovers exactly the limit of strong electron correlations at half-band filling. In this way, a more accurate description of W is obtained throughout the domain of representability of ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}},$ including the crossover from weak to strong correlations. As examples of applications results are given for the ground-state energy, charge-excitation gap, and charge susceptibility of the Hubbard model in one-, two-, and three-dimensional lattices. The performance of the method is demonstrated by comparison with available exact solutions, with numerical calculations, and with LDFT using a simpler dimer ansatz for W. Goals and limitations of the different approximations are discussed.
