Abstract

We investigate solitons in the one-dimensional classical many-body system of particles interacting by an inverse-square pair potential. We use a combination of numerical results for finite systems, and exact results for the continuum limit, to deduce properties of solitons in the thermodynamic limit. Two remarkable conjectures are supported by these results, and the correspondence with the exact results for the quantum system is established.

Waves and Solitons in the Continuum Limit of the Calogero-Sutherland Model

Alexios P. Polychronakos

We examine a collection of particles interacting with inverse-square two-body potentials in the thermodynamic limit. We find explicit large-amplitude density waves and soliton solutions for the motion of the system. Waves can be constructed as coherent states of either solitons or phonons. Therefore, either solitons or phonons can be considered as the fundamental excitations. The generic wave is shown to correspond to a two-band state in the quantum description of the system, while the limiting cases of solitons and phonons correspond to particle and hole excitations.

Solution of some integrable one-dimensional quantum systems

Bill Sutherland, B. Sriram Shastry

In this paper, we investigate a family of one-dimensional multicomponent quantum many-body systems. The interaction is an exchange interaction based on the familiar family of integrable systems which includes the inverse square potential. We show these systems to be integrable, and exploit this integrability to completely determine the spectrum including degeneracy, and thus the thermodynamics. The perioidic inverse square case is worked out explicitly. Next, we show that in the limit of strong interaction of the ``spin'' degrees of freedom decouple. Taking this limit for our example, we obtain a complete solution to a lattice system introduced recently by Shastry and by Haldane; our solution reproduces the numerical results. Finally, we emphasize the simple explanation for the high multiplicities found in this model.

Quantum Many-Body Problem in One Dimension: Thermodynamics

Bill Sutherland

We continue our investigation of a system of either fermions or bosons interacting in one dimension by a 2-body potential V(r) = g/r2. We first present an approximation for the eigenstates of a general 1-dimensional quantum many-body system. We then apply this approximation to the g/r2 potential, allowing complete determination of the thermodynamic properties. Finally, comparing the results with those properties known exactly, we conjecture that the approximation is, in fact, exact for the g/r2 potential.

Exciton, spinon, and spin wave modes in a soluble one-dimensional many-body system

Bill Sutherland, Rudolf A. Römer

In this paper, we present the exact solution (in the thermodynamic limit) to a one-dimensional, two-component, quantum many-body system in which like particles interact with a pair potential s(s+1)/${\mathrm{sinh}}^{2}$(r), while unlike particles interact with a pair potential -s(s+1)/${\mathrm{cosh}}^{2}$(r). We first give a proof of integrability, then derive the coupled equations determining the complete spectrum. All singularities occur in the ground state when there are equal numbers of the two components; we give explicit results for the ground state and low-lying states in this case.

We exhibit the exact ground state and the corresponding binding energy of the system composed of $N$ (nonidentical) quantum-mechanical particles interacting in one dimension via the potential ${V}_{\mathrm{ij}}({x}_{i}\ensuremath{-}{x}_{j})=g{({x}_{i}\ensuremath{-}{x}_{j})}^{\ensuremath{-}2}+({f}_{i}\ensuremath{-}{f}_{j}){({x}_{i}\ensuremath{-}{x}_{j})}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. We discuss some special choices of the constants ${f}_{i}$ and $g$ that yield examples of possible physical interest.
