Effect of the state of a quantized electromagnetic field on the interaction with an atom with allowance for the continuum

Abstract

This paper studies the effect of a transition into the continuous spectrum on the “collapse” and “revival” of population oscillations in an atom. It is shown that at large values of the mean number of photons in a radiation field and in conditions of weak ionization the phenomena of collapse and revival can still be observed, but the amplitude of population oscillations decreases exponentially because of the damping of the level. The interaction of a quantized electromagnetic field with a Λ system of an atom when one state is continuous is examined. Expressions are derived for the probability of “survival” of the atom when the quantized field was initially in a state with a given number of photons and when it was in a coherent state. An approximate calculation of the sum in averaging over the photon number distribution in the case of a coherent field leads to expressions for the probabilities of survival of the atom that transform into expressions, as the mean number of photons tends to infinity, corresponding to the case of a field in the representation of a fixed number of photons. The possibility of a stable state existing in a coherent quantized field is examined. It is found that for a Λ system the condition for the existence of a stable state remains valid in the case of a coherent state of the field when the photon number is large.

Ionization of a model quantum system by a single mode electromagnetic cavity field

Olga V. Tikhonova, A. M. Popov

The ionization of a model atom in a strong single-mode non-classical electromagnetic field is studied beyond the perturbation approach using the model of ``one discrete level + continuum'' for the atom. Explicit analytical expressions for the time-dependent probability of atomic ionization are obtained for different initial states of radiative field: Fock state, coherent wave packet, squeezed vacuum state. The results are compared to the ionization decay of discrete atomic level in a classical light field, and are analyzed for different mean number of radiative photons. The time-dependent distribution of the quantized field over photon number states is examined.

Dependence of emergence of the collapse and revival effect of Doppler — Rabi osciallations on the initial state of the moving-atom — electromagnetic-field system

A. V. Kozlovskiĭ

The quantum dynamics of a system consisting of a moving two-level atom and a single-mode electromagnetic field in the standing-wave resonator is studied by using the stationary phase approximation. The conditions resulting in the emergence of the collapse — revival effect of Doppler — Rabi oscillations are analysed for the initial coherent state of the electromagnetic field in the resonator. It is shown that both the character and the possibility of this effect emergence directly depend on the initial parameters of the system: the rate of the atomic centre-of-mass motion, coupling constants of the atom with the field, the mean number of photons in the resonator. Under conditions when the collapse — revival effect is absent, the system dynamics qualitatively depends on the intial electronic state of the atom.

General properties of quantum optical systems in a strong-field limit

S. M. Chumakov, A. B. Klimov, J. J. Sánchez-Mondragón

We investigate the dynamics of an arbitrary atomic system (n-level atom or many n-level atoms) interacting with a resonant quantized mode of an electromagnetic field in a lossless cavity. Initially, the field is taken in a coherent state with a large average photon number. If the initial atomic state is chosen as an eigenstate of the atomic Hamiltonian in the classical field limit (semiclassical eigenstates), then the evolution of the system wave function is approximately factorized into the field and atomic parts. Explicit analytical expressions are given for the factorized wave functions. The time evolution of an arbitrary initial atomic state can be fully described in terms of factorized states. As examples, we discuss trapping states, and collapses and revivals of the atomic energy.

Studies on the interaction of two level atoms with quantized electromagnetic field

K. V. PRIYESH, R. B. Thayyullathil

The present study described about the interaction of a two level atom and squeezed field with time varying frequency. By applying a sinusoidal variation\nin the frequency of the field, the randomness in population inversion is reduced and the collapses and periodic revivals are regained. Quantum optics is an emerging field in physics which mainly deals with the interaction of atoms with quantised electromagnetic fields. Jaynes-Cummings Model (JCM) is a key model among them, which describes the interaction between a two level atom and a single mode radiation field. Here the study begins with a brief history of light, atom and their interactions. Also discussed the interaction between atoms and electromagnetic fields. The study suggest a method to manipulate the population inversion due to interaction and control the randomness in it, by applying a time dependence on the frequency of the interacting squeezed field. The change in behaviour of the population inversion due to the presence of a phase factor in the applied frequency variation is explained here. This study also describes the interaction between two level atom and electromagnetic field in nonlinear Kerr medium. It deals with atomic and field state evolution in a coupled cavity system. \nOur results suggest a new method to control and manipulate the population of states in two level atom radiation interaction, which is very essential for quantum information processing. We have also studied the variation of atomic population inversion with time, when a two level atom interacts with light field, where\nthe light field has a sinusoidal frequency variation with a constant phase. In both coherent field and squeezed field cases, the population inversion variation is completely different from the phase zero frequency modulation case. It is observed that in the presence of a non zero phase φ, the population inversion oscillates sinusoidally. Also the collapses and revivals gradually disappears when φ increases\nfrom 0 to π/2. When φ = π/2 the evolution of population inversion is identical to the case when a two level atom interacts with a Fock state. Thus, by applying a phase shifted frequency modulation one can induce sinusoidal oscillations of atomic inversion in linear medium, those normally observed in Kerr medium. \nWe noticed that the entanglement between the atom and field can be controlled by\nvarying the period of the field frequency fluctuations. The system has been solved numerically and the behaviour of it for different initial conditions and different susceptibility values are analysed. It is observed that, for weak cavity coupling the effect of susceptibility is minimal. In cases of strong cavity coupling, susceptibility factor modifies the nature in which the probability oscillates with time. Effect\nof susceptibility on probability of states is closely related to the initial state of the system.

ENTANGLEMENT AND PHOTON DYNAMICS IN THE INTERACTION BETWEEN TWO QUANTIZED ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS AND 3-LEVEL ATOMS

Behrooz Vaseghi, G. Rezaei, Reza Khordad +1 more

We study in this paper the dynamics of two electromagnetic (EM) fields and their entanglement in the interaction with a 3-level atom (Λ-configuration). We investigate the interaction when initially one of the fields is in a single mode coherent state, and the other one is in a Fock(number) state. We have calculated the mean photon numbers of the fields and their entanglement by means of the fields entropy as a measure of it. The results show the synchronization between entanglement beats and collapses-revivals of the fields, which cause the field in the Fock state (noncoherent) to behave coherently during the interaction. Also the results offer a way to generate coherent fields and achieve any desired degree of entanglement with specified dynamics via controlling the parameters of the atomic system.

Evolution of Atomic Population in System of Two-mode Entangled Coherent Field Interacting with Atoms in Bell States in Kerr Medium

Zhuo‐Liang Cao

The time evolution of atomic population of the system, where the two identical two-level atoms in Bell states interact with two-mode entangled coherent field in a cavity filled with the Kerr medium, was investigated by means of quantum theory and numerical method. The effects of the atomic initial state, mean photon numbers of field, the degree of the entanglement for the entangled coherent field, and the coupling strength between the Kerr medium and field on the atom’s population are discussed via numerical calculations. The results show that the atomic population is time-independent provided that the atoms are in β11〉 state. For the other three Bell states, there will appear the periodical collapse-revival of atomic population if the initial mean photon number reaches some special values. With the increase of the initial mean photon number, the oscillation frequency of the time-evolution of atomic population increases correspondingly, and the amplitude decreases. The degree of the entanglement of the two-mode entangled coherent field has no effect on the frequency of the Rabi oscillation, but has an obvious effect on the amplitude of Rabi oscillation. When the coupling strength between the Kerr medium and field reaches some special values, it has the obvious effects on the cycle of collapse-revival of atomic population, the frequency and the amplitude of Rabi oscillation.
