Optical parametric amplification of arbitrarily polarized light in periodically poled LiNbO_3

Abstract

Optical parametric amplification (OPA) of arbitrarily polarized light is proposed in a multi-section periodically poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN). External electric field is applied on selected sections to induce the polarization rotation of involved lights, thus the quasi-phase matched optical parametric processes exhibit polarization insensitivity under suitable voltage. In addition to the amplified signal wave, an idler wave with the same polarization is generated simultaneously. As an example, a ~10 times OPA showing polarization independency is simulated. Applications of this technology are also discussed.

Polarization independent quasi-phase-matched sum frequency generation for single photon detection

Xiao-shi Song, Zi-yan Yu, Qin Wang +2 more

Polarization independent sum frequency generation (SFG) is proposed in an electro-optic (EO) tunable periodically poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN). The PPLN consists of four sections. External electric field could be selectively applied to them to induce polarization rotation between the ordinary and extraordinary waves. If the domain structure is well designed, the signal wave with an arbitrary polarization state could realize efficient frequency up-conversion as long as a z-polarized pump wave is selected. The applications in single photon detection and optical communications are discussed.

Broadband optical parametric amplification at the communication band with periodically poled lithium niobate

We report broadband optical parametric generation (OPG) in a single periodically poled lithium niobate crystal with a picosecond pump pulse at a fixed wavelength. We also demonstrate efficient optical parametric amplification of a broadband seed pulse within the quasi-phase-matched OPG band. The broad parametric gain band is attributed to group-velocity matching and degeneracy between the signal and idler, and the broad spectral width of the pumping source.

Generation and Detection of Coherent Pulse Trains in Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate Through Optical Parametric Amplification

Dayen Chad Voratovic

This work reports on the generation, modulation, and detection of temporally coherent pulses in periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) configured as an optical parametric amplifier (OPA).The OPA was pumped at 1 µm, by a 10 kHz, 1 ns, Nd:YAG laser. The cw seeding sources for the OPA were two separate 1550 nm lasers. One source had a short coherence length of .3km, the other a long coherence length of 95 km.The generated pulse trains where phase modulated by using a set of mirrors on a single axis motorized stage.A 10 km fiber optic delay line was used to simulate free space propagation.A homodyne, coherent optical detection system, utilizing the in-phase and quadrature components of the circularly polarized local oscillator, was built to detect the amplitude and phase modulated pulse trains. We report the detection of the modulated signal for the long coherence length source and the loss of the modulated signal for the short coherence length source, demonstrating that the OPA process can transfer the temporal coherence (or coherence length) of the input signal to the pulse-amplified signal

We review the capabilities of optical parametric amplifiers based on periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguides for applications in optical communications and quantum information processing. In particular, we discuss recent advances in wavelength-band conversion, broadband amplification, and the generation of squeezed and non-Gaussian states of light. These advances demonstrate the versatility of PPLN-based devices as essential components for future optical networks and optical quantum computing systems.
