Abstract

We report broadband optical parametric generation (OPG) in a single periodically poled lithium niobate crystal with a picosecond pump pulse at a fixed wavelength. We also demonstrate efficient optical parametric amplification of a broadband seed pulse within the quasi-phase-matched OPG band. The broad parametric gain band is attributed to group-velocity matching and degeneracy between the signal and idler, and the broad spectral width of the pumping source.

Indirectly seeded optical parametric generation in PPLN

M. J. Orozco-Arellanes, F. Alonso, L. A. Ríos +1 more

We show that pulsed quasi-phase matched optical parametric generation can be indirectly seeded with a weak cw beam with a wavelength different from that of either the signal or the idler waves. This is accomplished by first mixing the cw seed beam with the pulsed pump beam in a periodically poled lithuim niobate (PPLN) crystal to produce a weak signal beam which is then further amplified in the same crystal. The crystal has two regions with different domain structure periodicities. In the first region the periodicity is chosen to create a beam at 1561.5 nm, resulting from mixing a 15 mW, 632.8 nm beam and an intense, 7 ns 1064 nm pulse. In the second region, the periodicity produces amplification of this signal beam at 1561.5 nm. The output beam inherits the spectral and mode characteristics of the weak seed beam.

Broadband Quantum Photon Source in Step-Chirped Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate Waveguide

Xiao‐Xu Fang, Guo-Liang Shentu, Lu He

Broadband nonlinear optical devices play a critical role in both classical and quantum optics. Here, we design and fabricate a 6.82-mm-long step-chirped periodically poled lithium niobate~(CPPLN) waveguide on lithium niobate on insulator, which enables quasi-phase matching over a broad bandwidth for second-harmonic generation~(SHG) and spontaneous parametric down-conversion~(SPDC). The SHG achieves an average efficiency of 54.4\%/W/cm$^2$ over the first-harmonic wavelength range of 1510~nm-1620~nm, paving the way for realizing SPDC across a wide range of pump wavelengths. For SPDC, by tuning the pump wavelength to 775~nm, 780~nm, and 785~nm, we achieve broadband photon-pair generation with a maximum full bandwidth and brightness up to 99~THz~(846~nm) and 20~GHz/mW/nm, respectively. Our findings provide an efficient and experiment-friendly approach for generating broadband photon pairs, which holds significant promise for advancing applications in quantum metrology.

Optical parametric amplification of arbitrarily polarized light in periodically poled LiNbO_3

Guang-hao Shao, Xiao-shi Song, Fei Xu +1 more

Optical parametric amplification (OPA) of arbitrarily polarized light is proposed in a multi-section periodically poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN). External electric field is applied on selected sections to induce the polarization rotation of involved lights, thus the quasi-phase matched optical parametric processes exhibit polarization insensitivity under suitable voltage. In addition to the amplified signal wave, an idler wave with the same polarization is generated simultaneously. As an example, a ~10 times OPA showing polarization independency is simulated. Applications of this technology are also discussed.

Bright narrowband source of photon pairs at optical telecommunication wavelengths using a type-II periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide

We report on the generation of narrowband photon pairs at telecommunication wavelengths using a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide that utilizes the nonlinear tensor element d(24) for type-II quasi phase matching. The FWHM bandwidth of the spontaneous parametric downconversion was 1 nm. The brightness of the photon pair source was ~6x10(5)/s/GHz when the pump power was 1 mW. The indistinguishability of the signal and idler photons generated by the degenerate spontaneous parametric downconversion process was studied in a Hong-Ou-Mandel type interference experiment.
