Abstract

We have measured the variation of the spontaneous emission rate with polarization for self-assembled single quantum dots in two-dimensional photonic crystal membranes, and obtained a maximum anisotropy factor of 6 between the decay rates of the two nondegenerate bright states.

Highly anisotropic decay rates of single quantum dots in photonic crystal membranes

Q. Wang, Søren Stobbe, Henri Thyrrestrup +5 more

We have measured the variation of the spontaneous emission rate with polarization for self-assembled single quantum dots in two-dimensional photonic crystal membranes. We observe a maximum anisotropy factor of 6 between the decay rates of the two bright exciton states. This large anisotropy is attributed to the substantially different projected local density of optical states for differently oriented dipoles in the photonic crystal.

Imaging Single Quantum Dots in Three-Dimensional Photonic Crystals

Michael Barth, Roman Schuster, Achim Dieter Gruber +1 more

Performing fluorescence wide-field microscopy we have imaged single semiconductor quantum dots deep inside a 3-dimensional photonic crystal prepared from colloidal polymer beads. Exploring the emission diffraction patterns in defocused images of quantum dots we demonstrate that the direction-dependent photonic stop band imprints an anisotropy to the angular emission of a single quantum dot. Hence a single, quasi-point-like emitter is manipulated to radiate its photons only to certain well-defined directions by means of the anisotropic light propagation in photonic crystals. The experiments thus provide new routes to evaluate local, frequency selective optical properties in 3-dimensional photonic crystals employing single emitters.

Resonant coupling of quantum dot intersublevel transitions with midinfrared photonic crystal modes

Estelle Homeyer, Julien Houel, Xavier Checoury +9 more

We show that quantum dot intersublevel transitions can be coupled to midinfrared photonic crystal modes. The coupling is observed under optical pumping with S-P intersublevel transitions of InGaAs self-assembled quantum dots resonant around 20 μm wavelength. An enhancement in the intersublevel absorption and a spectral tuning are evidenced when the optical modes of two-dimensional photonic crystals enter in resonance with the photoinduced intersublevel absorption. This effect is illustrated in the case of GaAs two-dimensional photonic crystal membranes with lattice periodicities of 10.5, 9.5, and 8.5 μm containing multilayers of self-assembled quantum dots.

Enhanced two-photon processes in single quantum dots inside photonic crystal nanocavities

Ziliang Carter Lin, Jelena Vuckovic A

We show that the two-photon transition rates of quantum dots coupled to nanocavities are enhanced by up to several orders of magnitude relative to quantum dots in bulk host. We then propose how to take advantage of this enhancement to implement coherent quantum-dot excitation by two-photon absorption, entangled photon pair generation by two-photon spontaneous emission, and single-photon generation at telecom wavelengths by two-photon stimulated and spontaneous emission.

High polarization properties of single-photon emission from anisotropic InGaAs quantum dots

Huijun Zhou, Mu-Tian Cheng, Liu Shao-Ding +4 more

The high-polarized single-photon emission in single anisotropic InGaAs quantum d ots excited by linear pulse excitation was discussed. The expression of the pola rization and cross relaxation between two orthogonal eigenstates was given. It w as revealed that the cross relaxation increased with intensity of the excitation , which resulted in the decrease of polarization factor with the input pulse a rea.

Spontaneous Emission Properties of Single Emitters in Planar Photonic Crystals

Martina Gerken, Jurgen Muller, Rainer Bornemann +6 more

We investigate the quantum-optical interplay of two-dimensional (2D) planar photonic crystals with localized emitters. Due to the spatial variation of the photonic density of states in the photonic crystal unit cell the spontaneous emission properties dependent strongly on the location of the emitter. We infiltrate nanospheres doped with small dye molecules as localized probes into 2D hexagonal Nb2O5photonic crystals. Using spatially resolved spectroscopy and time correlated single photon counting direct measurements of the spontaneous emission properties of single, localized emitters are performed
