From nonrelativistic to relativistic properties of quantum harmonic oscillators

Abstract

We investigate some possible connections between two recent approaches of so-called relativistic harmonic oscillators compatible with well known nonrelativistic properties. These approaches are not equivalent but can be related through simple arguments based on quantum deformations of oscillatorlike algebras when one-dimensional spatial developments are visited.

On the Heisenberg-Lie Algebra and Some Non-Hermitian Operators in Oscillatorlike Developments

Jules Beckers, N. Debergh

After a few generalities we compare fundamental quantum mechanics applied to the harmonic oscillator with unusual oscillatorlike developments dealing with non-hermitian operators, this latter aspect exploiting in particular the property of subnormality. In this last context we can also restore the hermiticity of the Hamiltonian operator and discover a nice property of the new scalar product. General constructions of oscillatorlike Hamiltonians are also considered and new ideas connected with Heisenberg relations are presented.

Harmonic oscillators in relativistic quantum mechanics

F. Masafumi Toyama, Yukihisa Nogami

For the Dirac equation in one space dimension, we examine the possibility of harmonic oscillator (HO) potentials. A HO potential is such that it has only bound states and the energy levels are equally spaced. Regarding their Lorentz transformation properties, there are three types of potentials for the Dirac equation: vector, scalar, and pseudoscalar. HO potentials are possible for the scalar and pseudoscalar types, but not for the vector type. We show how HO potentials can be constructed by means of the ``inverse scattering method.'' We also examine the behavior of a wave packet in the HO potentials so constructed. The behavior is, in most of the cases, very similar to that of Schr\"odinger's coherent wave packet of the nonrelativistic harmonic oscillator.

Relativistic Dynamics of a Quantum System

Gintautas Kamuntavičius, Gintautas Kamuntavičius

In this paper, we examine quantum systems with relativistic dynamics. We show that for a successful description of these systems, the application of Galilei invariant nonrelativistic Hamiltonian is necessary. To modify this Hamiltonian to relativistic dynamics, we require precise relativistic kinetic energy operators instead of nonrelativistic ones for every internal (Jacobi) coordinate. Finally, we introduce and investigate the Schrödinger equation with relativistic dynamics for two-particle systems with harmonic oscillator and Coulomb potentials.

Relativistic Harmonic Oscillator

Alex Harvey

A relativistic formulation of the simple harmonic oscillator is discussed. It differs from the customary formulation in that it is derivable from a Lorentz-invariant variational principle. A consistent relativistic quantization procedure is thereby admitted.

The q-harmonic oscillators, q-coherent states and the q-symplecton

Lawrence C. Biedenharn, Max A. Lohe, Masao Nomura

The recently introduced notion of a quantum group is discussed conceptually and then related to deformed harmonic oscillators ('q-harmonic oscillators'). Two developments in applying q-harmonic oscillators are reviewed: q-coherent states and the q-symplecton.

A Non-relativistic Approach to Relativistic Quantum Mechanics: The Case of the Harmonic Oscillator

Luis A. Poveda, Luis Grave de Peralta, Jacob Pittman +1 more

Abstract A recently proposed approach to relativistic quantum mechanics (Grave de Peralta, Poveda, Poirier in Eur J Phys 42:055404, 2021) is applied to the problem of a particle in a quadratic potential. The methods, both exact and approximate, allow one to obtain eigenstate energy levels and wavefunctions, using conventional numerical eigensolvers applied to Schrödinger-like equations. Results are obtained over a nine-order-of-magnitude variation of system parameters, ranging from the non-relativistic to the ultrarelativistic limits. Various trends are analyzed and discussed—some of which might have been easily predicted, others which may be a bit more surprising.
