Dynamic holography for ultrashort light pulses

Abstract

The excitation of nonuniform holographic gratings by ultrashort light pulses in nonlinear cubic media is considered. The relaxation and the diffusion of the pulse-induced grating are investigated. The diffraction problem of the induced grating is solved using both the perturbation theory and the coupled-wave approach. It is shown that the measurement of the angular or spectral distribution of the diffracted probe light makes it possible to determine the complex-valued coherence function completely for a single nonreproducible pulse. A simple method for the determination of the exciting pulse area is proposed; it allows us to deduce the integral amplitude and duration for the pulse, which can serve as a good approximation for their corresponding real values.

Dynamic holography of ultrashort light pulses

Valentin S. Idiatulin

A study is made of the excitation of inhomogeneous holographic gratings by ultrashort light pulses with an arbitrary amplitude and phase modulation in a cubic nonlinear medium. The relaxation and diffusion of a pulse-induced grating is considered. The problem of diffraction of probe radiation by an inhomogeneous grating is solved using an electrodynamic theory of perturbations and also using the coupled wave approximation. It is shown that a cubic nonlinear medium may be used to store and then to retrieve uniquely a complete complex coherence function of a pulse. A simple method is proposed for the determination of the area under an exciting pulse, which makes it possible to introduce integral parameters of such a pulse (including a generalized amplitude and duration) that can serve as satisfactory estimates of the corresponding real quantities.

Induced-grating autocorrelation of ultrashort pulses in a slowly responding medium

Alfred M. Levine, Ercüment Özïzmïr, Rick P. Trebino +3 more

We consider induced-grating autocorrelation (IGA) in a slowly responding medium and study three possible geometries (two-beam coupling, three-beam induced grating, and self-diffraction) in two different limiting cases (single-pulse experiments and many-pulse accumulated-grating experiments). We find that in five of these six cases the IGA trace is given by the squared amplitude of the electric-field correlation function, thus yielding information about the spectrum of the pulse. Theoretical expressions for the IGA trace are derived for both linearly chirped and self-phase-modulated pulses. Experiments performed with self-phase-modulated pulses are in excellent agreement with the theory. In this case we show how the measured IGA trace can be used to determine both pulse duration and pulse bandwidth.

Frequency conversion of coherent images by thin and volume dynamic holograms

Omar A. Ormachea, O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik +3 more

One of the main advances of dynamical holography is the possibility to operate with coherent images in real-time experimental situation. Non-degenerate four-wave mixing has some advantages among different holographic methods because it gives the possibility to perform visualization of infra-red images or to convert visible radiation into ultra-violet region. In the work we study different schemes of frequency conversion of coherent images by thin and volume dynamic holograms nonlinearly formed in multilevel resonance media in conditions of non-degenerate four-wave mixing. The theoretical model of dynamic gratings formation in dye solutions based on coupled-wave equations has been developed. Experimental realization of frequency conversion of coherent images from infra-red to the visible and between different wavelengths of visible region has been performed. It has been shown that the criterion of hologram thickness is dependent on the optical density of medium and intensity of input radiation. The diffraction efficiency of dynamic gratings has been measured in conditions of optical bleaching and in the mode of strong absorption, enabling recording of thin gratings.

Two-dimensional measurement of the temporal correlation function of picosecond light pulses recorded in a photorefractive crystal

Hideki Okamura, Kazuo Kuroda

We describe a novel method for the measurement of spatially two-dimensional temporal amplitude correlation function of two coherent short light pulses with picosecond resolution in which the light pulses are recorded in a volume-holographic medium and the recorded information is read out by direct measurement of the spatial distribution of the grating formed in the medium. The feasibility of this method was experimentally proved by means of a photorefractive LiNbO3:Fe crystal and a 3.5-ps frequency-doubled mode-locked Nd:YAG laser. We measured the diffraction of a cw He–Ne laser by the grating formed in the crystal and calculated its envelope function by inversely solving coupled-wave equations.

Slow light based on holographic gratings

Guoquan Zhang

We have reviewed recent progresses on slow light based on holographic gratings such as stationary gratings, nonlinearly induced dynamic gratings and atomic coherence gratings. Several applications such as addressable multi-channel all-optical buffer memory and stored phase conjugate light wave based on slow light and stopped light pulses will be addressed.

Generation of tunable-volume transmission-holographic gratings at low light levels

Lu Zhao, Wenhui Duan, Susanne F. Yelin

By utilizing giant Kerr nonlinearity obtained by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), tunable volume transmission holographic gratings for a weak probe field can be generated by means of a standing-wave signal field at low light levels in a four-level $N$-type ultracold atomic ensemble. The induced grating can be characterized as a mixed volume holographic grating with a strong phase modulation accompanied by a weak amplitude modulation. Based on Kogelnik's coupled-wave theory in optical holography, we find that high diffraction efficiency (up to $85%$) and sensitive angular selectivity (up to $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.000149$ rad) can be achieved for the induced grating in the Bragg diffraction regime. And, both of them can be dynamically controlled by tuning the weak standing-wave signal field and the coupling field. Our study not only develops a fundamental understanding of volume diffraction effects in EIT media, but also provides a practical prototype of EIT-based holographic devices for all-optical classical and quantum information processing.
