Spatially periodic structures of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract

The conditions providing the formation of periodic vortex lattices of an interference nature in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (i.e., in the absence of rotation of the condensate) are determined. Spatially periodic exact solutions of the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation (the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation) that describes the Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas of alkali metal atoms with due regard for the nonlocality of interatomic interactions are obtained in the form of a set of two or three plane waves. It is shown that periodic vortex lattices can be produced in interference experiments with a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas of alkali metal atoms.

On stability of spatially periodic structures of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate

Nikolai N Rozanov

The stability of spatially periodic structures, including vortex lattices, in a dilute atomic Bose-Einstein condensate is analyzed. By using the approximate solution of the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation (the generalized Gross-Pitaevskiĭ equation), it is shown that, in the limit of low concentrations, such structures are stable.

Dynamics and Stability of Bose-Einstein Condensates: the Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation with Periodic Potential

Bernard Deconinck, Béla A. Frigyik, J. Nathan Kutz

The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a lattice potential is used to model a periodic dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensate. Both two- and three-dimensional condensates are considered, for atomic species with either repulsive or attractive interactions. A family of exact solutions and corresponding potential is presented in terms of elliptic functions. The dynamical stability of these exact solutions is examined using both analytical and numerical methods. For condensates with repulsive atomic interactions, all stable, trivial-phase solutions are off-set from the zero level. For condensates with attractive atomic interactions, no stable solutions are found, in contrast to the one-dimensional case.

Instabilities and vortex-lattice formation in rotating conventional and dipolar dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates

A. Martin, Nicholas G. Parker, Rick van Bijnen +2 more

A theoretical study of vortex-lattice formation in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates confined by a rotating elliptical trap is presented. For the conventional case of purely s-wave interatomic interactions, this is done through a consideration of both hydrodynamic equations and time-dependent simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We discriminate three distinct, experimentally testable regimes of instability: ripple, interbranch , and catastrophic . Additionally, we generalize the classical hydrodynamical approach to include long-range dipolar interactions, showing how the static solutions and their stability in the rotating frame are significantly altered. This enables us to examine the routes towards unstable dynamics, which, in analogy to conventional condensates, may lead to vortex-lattice formation.

Spatially localized trains of soliton in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates with periodic potential

Nkeh Oma Nfor, Akoni Brikly Njinabo, F. M. Moukam Kakmeni

We investigate the spatial profiles of periodic localized modes in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates, by solving the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of elliptic-type periodic potential. By considering a one-dimensional time independent linearized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we obtained three bound state solutions and energies emanating from the first order Lamé equation. When the nonlinearity induced by the two body inter-atomic interactions are fully activated, spatially localized trivial phase periodic solutions of the attractive condensates are analytically obtained using the ansatz technique coupled with the direct integral method. Results of numerical simulation depicts trivial phase solutions, which are uniform train of spatially localized modes that are insensitive to variation of the elliptic modulus. However in the non-trivial phase regime, the spatially localized trains of soliton become very structurally unstable. This work underscores the spontaneous generation of periodic potential by the condensate wave function, determine the band structure of the lattice and basic properties of periodic matter waves under linear conditions, and highlight various spatial nonlinear periodic modes in the condensate. Finally, our investigation provides a solid theoretical framework that finds potential application in the fabrication of atomic lasers, periodic matter-wave gratings and quantum logic gates.

Calculation of Bose-Einstein Condensations and Characteristic Features of Fluctuations for Systems with and without a Vortex in Two-Component Alkali Atom Gases

Kensuke Doi, Yuhei Natsume

Characteristic features in phases of Bose-Einstein condensations (BEC) for systems of two-components in gas phases of Alkali-metal atoms trapped by harmonic potentials are discussed on the basis of numerical calculations by the use of Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Condensations with and without vortices are considered in order to make clear spatial distributions. The shape of spatial distribution is essentially dependent on the ratio of interaction strengths between intra-components and inter-components. We emphasize the possibility of coexistence of vortex-free state (where the angular momentum ℓ is 0.) for the one component in BEC and vortex state (ℓ z =1) for another component whose shape is the donut-like spatial distribution. Furthermore, fluctuations of these states are discussed. In partiucular, we concentrate our attention to the appearance of the core modes with ℓ z =0 symmetry for the component with a vortex. In connection with the behavior of the core modes, the contribution of the component without a vortex to the stability of the above vortex is discussed on the basis of numerical calculation.

Vortex lattice of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a rotating anisotropic trap

Mehmet Özgür Oktel

We study the vortex lattices in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a rotating anisotropic harmonic trap. We first investigate the single-particle wave functions obtained by the exact solution of the problem and give simple expressions for these wave functions in the small anisotropy limit. Depending on the strength of the interactions, a few or a large number of vortices can be formed. In the limit of many vortices, we calculate the density profile of the cloud and show that the vortex lattice stays triangular. We also find that the vortex lattice planes align themselves with the weak axis of the external potential. For a small number of vortices, we numerically solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and find vortex configurations that are very different from the vortex configurations in an axisymmetric rotating trap.
