Abstract

We investigate the spatial profiles of periodic localized modes in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates, by solving the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of elliptic-type periodic potential. By considering a one-dimensional time independent linearized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we obtained three bound state solutions and energies emanating from the first order Lamé equation. When the nonlinearity induced by the two body inter-atomic interactions are fully activated, spatially localized trivial phase periodic solutions of the attractive condensates are analytically obtained using the ansatz technique coupled with the direct integral method. Results of numerical simulation depicts trivial phase solutions, which are uniform train of spatially localized modes that are insensitive to variation of the elliptic modulus. However in the non-trivial phase regime, the spatially localized trains of soliton become very structurally unstable. This work underscores the spontaneous generation of periodic potential by the condensate wave function, determine the band structure of the lattice and basic properties of periodic matter waves under linear conditions, and highlight various spatial nonlinear periodic modes in the condensate. Finally, our investigation provides a solid theoretical framework that finds potential application in the fabrication of atomic lasers, periodic matter-wave gratings and quantum logic gates.

Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices: Band-gap structure and solitons

Pearl J. Y. Louis, Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Craig M. Savage +1 more

We analyze the existence and stability of spatially extended (Bloch-type) and localized states of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into an optical lattice. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential, we study the band-gap structure of the matter-wave spectrum in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. We demonstrate the existence of families of spatially localized matter-wave gap solitons, and analyze their stability in different band gaps, for both repulsive and attractive atomic interactions.

Lattice solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Nikolaos K. Efremidis, Demetrios N. Christodoulides

We systematically study the properties of lattice solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with either attractive or repulsive atom interactions. This is done, by exactly solving the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of a periodic potential. We find new families of lattice soliton solutions that are characterized by the position of the energy eigenvalue within the associated band structure. These include lattice solitons in condensates with either attractive or repulsive atom interactions that exist in finite or semi-infinite gaps, as well as nonlinear modes that exhibit atomic population cutoffs.

SOLITONS IN ATTRACTIVE MATTER-WAVE CONDENSATE IN VARIABLE ANHARMONIC PERIODIC POTENTIALS

D. Belobo Belobo, Thierry Blanchard Ekogo, G. H. Ben-Bolie +1 more

Solitons in one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interaction in variable anharmonic periodic potentials are presented. These variable periodic potentials allow us to consider a variety of potential shapes between the two special limits of the Kronig-Penney model and the inverse Kronig-Penney model, with the sinusoidal optical lattice as an intermediate case. The Gross-Pitaevskii equation in (1D) is taken as a model [53]. We have derived the stability conditions for BECs in variable anharmonic periodic potentials using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. We have found that the stability condition for solitons depends significantly on the shape parameter. In particular, depending on the values of the shape parameter, one and three localized states for the 1D case, respectively, have been found. We have shown that some of these localized states are stable or unstable. The stability conditions obtained are an extension of the existing results to: (1) the more general class of external potential, and (2) the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion has been generalized in the case of an external potential of arbitrary shape. A fully numerical simulation of the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation finally tests the results of the variational approximation. A good agreement between both the methods is observed.

Localized nonlinear matter waves in a Bose–Einstein condensate with spatially inhomogeneous two- and three-body interactions

Deng‐Shan Wang, Xiang‐Gui Li

We investigate the profiles and stability of the localized nonlinear matter waves in a Bose–Einstein condensate with spatially inhomogeneous two- and three-body interactions in various external potentials both analytically and numerically. Several families of localized stationary solutions of the one-dimensional mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation with cubic–quintic nonlinearities are obtained by similarity transformation. It is shown that the whole Bose–Einstein condensate can have an infinite number of localized nonlinear matter waves determined by certain non-negative integers. The linear and dynamical stabilities of the localized stationary solutions are studied numerically, and some stable localized nonlinear matter waves are found. We demonstrate that the attractive inhomogeneous two- and three-body interactions support linearly and dynamically stable localized nonlinear matter waves, but attractive two-body interaction along with repulsive three-body interaction destroys the linear stability. Moreover, an anharmonic potential is proposed to stabilize the localized nonlinear matter waves in the Bose–Einstein condensate with spatially inhomogeneous interactions.

Stability of exact solutions of the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic potential in two dimensions

Bernard Deconinck, Béla A. Frigyik, J. Nathan Kutz

The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with repulsive nonlinearity and elliptic function potential in two-dimensions models a repulsive dilute gas Bose--Einstein condensate in a lattice potential. A family of exact stationary solutions is presented and its stability is examined using analytical and numerical methods. All stable trivial-phase solutions are off-set from the zero level. Our results imply that a large number of condensed atoms is sufficient to form a stable, periodic condensate. Stability of attractive Bose-Einstein condensates in a periodic potential

Jared C. Bronski, Lincoln D. Carr, R. Carretero-González +3 more

Using a standing light wave potential, a stable quasi-one-dimensional attractive dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate can be realized. In a mean-field approximation, this phenomenon is modeled by the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with attractive nonlinearity and an elliptic function potential of which a standing light wave is a special case. New families of stationary solutions are presented. Some of these solutions have neither an analog in the linear Schr\"odinger equation nor in the integrable nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. Their stability is examined using analytic and numerical methods. Trivial-phase solutions are experimentally stable provided they have nodes and their density is localized in the troughs of the potential. Stable time-periodic solutions are also examined.
