Abstract

Solitons in one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interaction in variable anharmonic periodic potentials are presented. These variable periodic potentials allow us to consider a variety of potential shapes between the two special limits of the Kronig-Penney model and the inverse Kronig-Penney model, with the sinusoidal optical lattice as an intermediate case. The Gross-Pitaevskii equation in (1D) is taken as a model [53]. We have derived the stability conditions for BECs in variable anharmonic periodic potentials using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. We have found that the stability condition for solitons depends significantly on the shape parameter. In particular, depending on the values of the shape parameter, one and three localized states for the 1D case, respectively, have been found. We have shown that some of these localized states are stable or unstable. The stability conditions obtained are an extension of the existing results to: (1) the more general class of external potential, and (2) the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion has been generalized in the case of an external potential of arbitrary shape. A fully numerical simulation of the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation finally tests the results of the variational approximation. A good agreement between both the methods is observed.

The stability of matter-wave solitons in 2D linear and nonlinear optical lattices

Chen Hai-Jun, Xiangfu Li

By means of variational solution and direct numerical simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), we have studied the stability of matter-wave solitons in two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensations (BECs), with 2D linear and nonlinear optical lattices (OLs). Using the static variational approach and Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion necessary for stability, we obtain the stability condition for solitons in different combinations of OL's parameters. We show that the 2D linear and nonlinear optical lattices allow us to stabilize 2D solitons for both attractive and repulsive interactions. We also study the time-evolution problems of 2D BECs, using the time-dependent variational approach and numerical solution of GPE for 2D linear and nonlinear OLs. Very good agreement between the results corresponding to both treatments is observed.

Dissipative dynamics of matter-wave solitons in a nonlinear optical lattice

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, H. L. F. da Luz +1 more

Dynamics and stability of solitons in two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC), with one-dimensional (1D) conservative plus dissipative nonlinear optical lattices, are investigated. In the case of focusing media (with attractive atomic systems), the collapse of the wave packet is arrested by the dissipative periodic nonlinearity. The adiabatic variation of the background scattering length leads to metastable matter-wave solitons. When the atom feeding mechanism is used, a dissipative soliton can exist in focusing 2D media with 1D periodic nonlinearity. In the defocusing media (repulsive BEC case) with harmonic trap in one direction and nonlinear optical lattice in the other direction, the stable soliton can exist. Variational approach simulations are confirmed by full numerical results for the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Spatially localized trains of soliton in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates with periodic potential

Nkeh Oma Nfor, Akoni Brikly Njinabo, F. M. Moukam Kakmeni

We investigate the spatial profiles of periodic localized modes in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates, by solving the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of elliptic-type periodic potential. By considering a one-dimensional time independent linearized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we obtained three bound state solutions and energies emanating from the first order Lamé equation. When the nonlinearity induced by the two body inter-atomic interactions are fully activated, spatially localized trivial phase periodic solutions of the attractive condensates are analytically obtained using the ansatz technique coupled with the direct integral method. Results of numerical simulation depicts trivial phase solutions, which are uniform train of spatially localized modes that are insensitive to variation of the elliptic modulus. However in the non-trivial phase regime, the spatially localized trains of soliton become very structurally unstable. This work underscores the spontaneous generation of periodic potential by the condensate wave function, determine the band structure of the lattice and basic properties of periodic matter waves under linear conditions, and highlight various spatial nonlinear periodic modes in the condensate. Finally, our investigation provides a solid theoretical framework that finds potential application in the fabrication of atomic lasers, periodic matter-wave gratings and quantum logic gates.

Stable three-dimensional solitons in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in an optical lattice

DUMITRU BOGDAN MIHALACHE, Dumitru Mazilu, F. Lederer +4 more

The existence and stability of solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interatomic interactions, described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a three-dimensional (3D) periodic potential, are investigated in a systematic form. We find a one-parameter family of stable 3D solitons in a certain interval of values of their norm, provided that the strength of the potential exceeds a threshold value. The minimum number of $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms in the stable solitons is 60, and the energy of the soliton at the stability threshold is $\ensuremath{\approx}6$ recoil energies in the lattice. The respective energy versus norm diagram features two cuspidal points, resulting in a typical swallowtail pattern, which is a generic feature of 3D solitons supported by quasi-two-dimensional or fully dimensional lattice potentials.

Nonautonomous matter-wave solitons near the Feshbach resonance

V. N. Serkin, Akira Hasegawa, Tatyana Leonidovna Belyaeva

By means of analytical and numerical methods, we reveal the main features of nonautonomous matter-wave solitons near the Feshbach resonance in a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate confined by a harmonic potential with a varying-in-time longitudinal trapping frequency. Based on the generalized nonautonomous Gross-Pitaevskii model, we show that solitons in nonautonomous physical systems exist only under certain conditions so that varying-in-time nonlinearity and confining harmonic potential cannot be chosen independently; they satisfy the exact integrability scenarios and complement each other. We focus on the most physically important examples where the applied magnetic field is either a linearly or a periodically varying-in-time function. In the case of periodically varying scattering length, variations of confining harmonic potential are found to be sign-reversible (periodic attractive and repulsive) to support the soliton-management regime. We investigate the losses of validity of one-dimensional (1D) approximation in the cases when, by the joint action of varying-in-time nonlinearity and confining potential, the atom cloud can be compressed from an initially elongated quasi-1D cigar-shaped geometry to a final ball-shaped three-dimensional geometry and the induced soliton collapse may occur.

Matter-wave bright solitons in bose-einstein condensate / Abdelaziz Benseghir

A. Benseghir

We investigate the properties of modulational instability in the Salerno equation in quasi-one dimension in Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We analyzed the regions of modulational instability of nonlinear plane waves and determine the conditions of its existence in BEC. The existence and stability of strongly localized modes in discrete media is investigated with the framework of the Salerno model by using a linear analysis method. The regions of stability and instability are determined. Also the existence of localized modes for different values of parameters is shown numerically by homoclinic orbits intersection method. The response of Bose–Einstein condensates is studied with strong dipole–dipole atomic interactions to periodically varying perturbation. The dynamics is governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with an additional nonlinear term, corresponding to nonlocal dipolar interactions. A mathematical model, based on the variational approximation, has been developed and applied to study parametric excitation of the condensates due to coefficient of nonlocal nonlinearity varying periodically. The model predicts the waveform of solitons in dipolar condensates and describes their small amplitude dynamics quite accurately. Theoretical predictions are verified by numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation and a good agreement between them is found. The results can lead to better understanding of the properties of ultra-cold quantum gases, such as 52Cr, 164Dy and 168Er, where the long-range dipolar atomic interactions dominate the usual contact interactions. Dynamics of a matter wave soliton bouncing on the reflecting surface (atomic mirror) under the effect of gravity has been studied by analytical and numerical means. The iv analytical description is based on the variational approach. Resonant oscillations of the soliton's center of mass and width, induced by appropriate modulation of the atomic scattering length and the slope of the linear potential are analyzed. In numerical experiments, we observe the Fermi type acceleration of the soliton when the vertical position of the reflecting surface is periodically varied in time. Analytical predictions are compared with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and a qualitative agreement between them is found.
