Wavefront reversal of optical beams in resonant media

Abstract

It is shown that detuning from resonance in resonant media may cause wavefront reversal (WFR) accompanied by rotation. This effect is due to parametric diffraction from phase gratings of the population difference. In resonance, WFR may be found without phase distortions as a result of diffraction from gain gratings in the inverted medium. An analysis is made of the initial stage of the WFR kinetics and the possibility of observing inhomogeneities in WFR is studied.

Efficiency of wavefront reversal of optical beams in four-wave interactions in a resonant medium

Pavel A Apanasevich, Anatoly A. Afanas'ev, С. П. Жвавый

An analysis is made of reversal of the phase front of an optical beam in four-wave interaction in a resonant medium. Expressions are obtained for the amplitudes of the signal and reversed beams. It is shown that the reversal coefficient does not depend on the sign of the frequency detuning and may be much greater than unity at pump powers not exceeding the saturation power of the resonance transition.

Possible use of resonantly excited media in wavefront reversal

А. Н. Ораевский

A theoretical analysis is made of the conditions which a resonantly excited medium must have to act as a wavefront-reversing mirror. In the absence of saturation by the incident signal, the absorption cross section at the frequency of this signal should be considerably less than at the reversed-wave frequency. In the case of strong saturation it is preferable to use substances with narrow spectral lines. If a wavefrontreversing mirror is used to compensate distortions of the front of a wave during amplification, the necessary contrast of the reversed wave is a function of the gain and of the width of its profile.

Nondegenerate reversal of polarized light by four-wave interaction in a resonant medium

G. G. Adonts, D G Akopyan

The representation of irreducible tensor operators is used to develop a theory of wavefront reversal (WFR) in the absence of saturation effects. This theory deals with arbitrarily polarized waves in a two-level resonant medium having arbitrary angular momenta. It is shown that there are three different physical reversal mechanisms associated with a nonuniform population and with the coherence of the magnetic sublevels in the field. An investigation is made of the influence of the decay times of the polarization moments of the system (the total population, orientation, alignment) on WFR. In particular, it is shown that, subject to specific relationships between the decay times, new collision-induced reversal processes can occur in the presence of deorienting collisions. An investigation is made of the spectral composition of the reflection coefficient of the reversed wave and it is shown that there are various spectral ranges of efficient reversal which in general depend on the polarizations of the interacting waves.

Wavefront reversal in a four-wave interaction in moving slow-response media

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Michail G. Galushkin, E M Zemskov

A theoretical investigation is made of the characteristics of wavefront reversal in the course of a degenerate four-wave interaction in moving slow-response media. It is shown that the displacement (by a moving medium) of amplitude and phase gratings, and also diffusion of excited particles may influence greatly the parameters of a reversed wave. The characteristics of a nonlinear mechanism of light-induced heat evolution in thermodynamic-nonequilibrium media are determined for spatially inhomogeneous radiation.

Self-reversal of the wavefront of high-power radiation in a light-induced four-wave interaction in a resonant medium

Pavel A Apanasevich, Anatolii A Afanas'ev, S. Ya. Kilin

A wavefront reversal system is proposed for high-power optical radiation. This system is based on a resonant four-wave interaction without recourse to external pump waves. Stimulated scattering of the wave being reversed in a resonant medium placed inside a resonator creates two opposite pump waves and a parametric interaction between them generates reversed radiation. The efficiency of such self-reversal is comparable with the efficiency of conventional wavefront reversal as a result of a four-wave interaction in nonresonant media with a phase nonlinearity and it may reach 10 −3 .
