Self-induced adiabatic inversion under one-photon resonance conditions

Abstract

An analysis is made of the interaction between an alkali metal atom and a strong laser pulse in the presence of a static magnetic field. It is assumed that the carrier frequency of the pulse is close to the frequency of the S1/2–P3/2 transition. It is shown that a weak ellipticity of the polarization of the pulse may give rise to a self-induced adiabatic population inversion. This effect can be studied by measuring the emf associated with a change in the average magnetic moment of an atom. An investigation is made of the dependence of the amplitude and duration of this emf signal on the laser pulse parameters. Changes in the structure of the signal associated with changes in the pulse frequency are discussed.

Self-induced resonance under conditions of radiative equilibrium of quasienergy states in a three-level system

M. A. Sarkisyan

An analysis is made of the interaction of a three-level cascade atomic system with a resonant laser field. An investigation is made of the dynamics of the populations of the quasienergy states and of the atomic levels over times greater than the spontaneous transition times. In the steady-state regime the distribution of atoms over various quasienergy states is obtained under two-photon resonance conditions and for the case when all the resonances are strong. It is found that a suitable selection of the interaction parameters can establish an inversion between the quasienergy states and also due to atomic transitions. The total probability of spontaneous scattering is calculated. It is shown that, under two-photon resonance conditions, the scattering intensity increases sharply due to a self-induced resonance.

Induced Change in Polarization of Ultrashort Pulses of Light

V.M. Arutunyan, A. Zh. Muradyan, L. Petrosyan

A theoretical investigation of the change in polarization of ultrashort pulses of light near the two-photon resonance is carried out. A strong wave of circular polarization in the medium induces optical anisotropy which affects the change in weak probe-wave polarization. It is shown, that owing to an interaction transient, the probe-wave polarization becomes elliptical whose parameters change depending on time and position. This leads, in turn, to oscillation dependence of the rotated component of the probe field amplitude on the pumping energy, and the length and density of the resonant medium.

Theory of a two-photon laser amplifier

Lorenzo M. Narducci, William W. Eidson, Paul S. Furcinitti +1 more

We discuss the propagation of an electromagnetic pulse through an active medium prepared in a state of inversion between two levels of the same parity. Since no electric dipole transition is possible between the chosen atomic levels, we investigate the possibility of amplification of an injected signal having a carrier frequency equal to one-half the atomic-transition frequency. We show that under suitable conditions a nonlinear atomic polarization can be generated which oscillates at the same frequency as the incident electromagnetic pulse. The coupled atom-field evolution is described by the usual self-consistent approach. When atomic relaxation effects are negligible, we derive an equation describing the spatial evolution of the energy of the propagating pulse. From this equation we characterize the threshold condition for power amplification and classify the multiple steady-state solutions of the propagation problem. The evolution of the pulse envelope through the amplifier is analyzed with the help of a hybrid computer simulation. Pulse-envelope modulation and multiple-pulse formation even in the asymptotic limit of long amplifiers are displayed.

DC electric field effect on the magnetic field induced frequency mixing in alkali atoms

Polina V. Mironova, Vitalii D Ovsiannikov, Viacheslav V. Tchernouchkine

A static electric field may induce essential changes to the cross section for the magnetic-field-induced coherent frecuency mixing of two laser waves, modifying the cross-section dependence on the magnetic field and polarization vectors of incident waves, which depends on the ratio of M1/E2 contributions to n1 2P1/2 (3/2) - n2 2P3/2(1/2) radiation transition amplitude. Relations between the M1/E2 ratio and quantitative characteristics of polarization asymmetry in cross section are determined. Calculated numerical data are presented for coherent mixing of two laser waves on Cs, Rb and K atoms.

Atomic Relaxation in the Presence of a Coherent Optical Field

E. A. Sziklas

Atomic relaxation in the presence of a strong coherent optical field is examined. Contrary to popular practice, we find that the Bloch equations do not apply when the applied field is strong enough to saturate the transition. The component of the induced polarization in phase with the field lives longer than the out-of-phase component. One important consequence is that pulse durations for adiabatic inversion of atomic levels need not be short relative to the transverse relaxation time of the atom if the pulse amplitude is sufficiently large.

Effects of Saturation and Self-Saturation in Unidirectional-Wave Spectroscopy of Transition between Levels with a Total Moment of J = 1

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко

Abstract Nonlinear absorption of a probe field in a system of degenerate levels of an atom characterized by a total moment of J = 1 in unidirectional waves is studied analytically and numerically taking into account saturation by its own spontaneous emission (OSE). The trends in changes of the amplitude and frequency characteristics of the nonlinear resonance associated with open and closed types of transitions for different polarizations of the waves that are introduced by self-saturation are established. Specific manifestations of the effect, including those related to magnetic coherence of levels, are revealed.
