Self-induced resonance under conditions of radiative equilibrium of quasienergy states in a three-level system

Abstract

An analysis is made of the interaction of a three-level cascade atomic system with a resonant laser field. An investigation is made of the dynamics of the populations of the quasienergy states and of the atomic levels over times greater than the spontaneous transition times. In the steady-state regime the distribution of atoms over various quasienergy states is obtained under two-photon resonance conditions and for the case when all the resonances are strong. It is found that a suitable selection of the interaction parameters can establish an inversion between the quasienergy states and also due to atomic transitions. The total probability of spontaneous scattering is calculated. It is shown that, under two-photon resonance conditions, the scattering intensity increases sharply due to a self-induced resonance.

Role of quasienergy levels in the processes of amplification of light by stimulated emission of radiation

R. N. Shakhmuratov

A theoretical study is made of the influence of changes in the relaxation of a three-level system in a resonance field on the dispersion, absorption, and difference between the populations of levels activated by noncoherent pumping. This change in the relaxation is due to a tendency of a thermal reservoir to create an additional difference between the populations of quasienergy states that appear under the influence of the resonance field. It is shown that as a consequence there is a considerable change in the nature of the interaction with the radiation field in laser crystals with three-level active centers when the pump power is close to the threshold. The lasing conditions are found subject to such changes. It is shown that the threshold pump power can be reduced in this case to a value at which the difference between the populations of the active levels vanishes and lasing appears because of an inversion of the populations in a system of quasienergy levels. Under transient conditions the lasing frequency near the threshold should then depend on the pump

Resonant scattering of three-level Rydberg atoms in a microwave field

A. V. Bezverbnyĭ, Igor M. Beterov, Anatolii M Tumaikin +1 more

We examine the theory of potential scattering of Rydberg atoms in a microwave field. The model of a three-level atom is employed to calculate the radiative force emerging in the resonant coherent interaction with the microwave field for the case of a two-photon resonance and high intensities, using the method of quasienergies of the system consisting of the atom and the field. We determine the probabilities of Landau-Zener transitions in the spatial regions where under two-photon resonance conditions the quasienergies of the atoms approach one another by a small quantity. We also study the dynamics of the variation of the spatial profile of a beam of Rydberg atoms caused by resonant scattering. Finally, we give the results of the first experimental observation of the variation of the transverse beam profile when Rydberg atoms pass through a nonuniform microwave field formed in a rectangular waveguide and in resonance with the two-photon 36 P –37 P transition.

The dynamics and spontaneous radiation of a two-level atom in a bichromatic field

S P Goreslavsky, Nikolai B. Delone, В. П. Крайнов

The interaction of a two-level atom with two monochromatic electromagnetic fields having arbitrary amplitudes and resonance frequencies is considered. It is shown that the time averaged upper-level population can exceed 0.5 and even reach 0.7. Its dependence on the frequency difference reveals resonance satellite peaks, which are concerned with three- and five-photon combination scattering. The widths and the resonance spectrum shifts of these peaks are found. The frequency spectrum of the spontaneous emission of an atom contains fine structure under some conditions. This structure does not exist in the case of one monochromatic field. An asymmetry in the intensity distribution for the Rabi satellites due to a field non-monochromaticity is predicted.

Excitation spectra of a three-level atom in the "lambda" configuration at high photon densities. II. Numerical results

K.J. Woloschuk, S. Hontzeas, Constantine Mavroyannis

We have performed a numerical calculation for the excitation spectra arising from the interaction of a three-level atom in the lambda configuration with a strong electromagnetic field whose frequency mode is initially populated. The excitation spectra are considered for equal detunings, which refer to the cooperative two-photon resonance process, as well as for different detunings. The computed cooperative two-photon resonance spectra are compared with those derived by analytical methods. In the presence of different detunings, conditions are established under which the laser field induces sidebands at the frequency equal to that for the forbidden transition. Numerical calculations for a wide range of Rabi frequencies and detunings are presented graphically. Detailed discussion of the computed spectral intensities is given and a comparison is made between the spectra of three-level atoms in the lambda and cascade configurations.

Self-induced adiabatic inversion under one-photon resonance conditions

A. O. Melikyan, S. G. Saakyan, M. A. Sarkisyan

An analysis is made of the interaction between an alkali metal atom and a strong laser pulse in the presence of a static magnetic field. It is assumed that the carrier frequency of the pulse is close to the frequency of the S1/2–P3/2 transition. It is shown that a weak ellipticity of the polarization of the pulse may give rise to a self-induced adiabatic population inversion. This effect can be studied by measuring the emf associated with a change in the average magnetic moment of an atom. An investigation is made of the dependence of the amplitude and duration of this emf signal on the laser pulse parameters. Changes in the structure of the signal associated with changes in the pulse frequency are discussed.

Influence of interference effects of spontaneous emission on the behavior and spectra of resonance fluorescence of a three-level atom in a strong wave field

A. A. Panteleev, Vl. K. Rerikh, A. N. Starostin

An investigation is made of the influence of quantum interference processes accompanying radiative relaxation of excited states on the population dynamics, total intensity, and spectra of the resonance fluorescence of three-level V -type atoms. Analytic expressions are obtained for the total intensity and spectra of the resonance fluorescence taking into account the off-diagonal nature of the radiative relaxation operator. It is shown that quantum interference process can substantially alter the total spontaneous emission intensity of the atoms and the population dynamics of the atomic levels, as well as the resonance fluorescence spectra.
