Abstract

We show the formation of slow optical solitons in the asymmetric coupled double quantum wells (CQW) via a two-photon Raman resonance. With the consideration of real parameters in AlGaAs -based CQW, we indicate the possibility to have cancelation of the linear absorption, giant Kerr nonlinearities, and slow group velocity propagation of the weak probe pulse at the same one-photon detuning frequency around several THz .

Giant Kerr Nonlinearity, Controlled Entangled Photons and Polarization Phase Gates in Coupled Quantum-Well Structures

Chengjie Zhu, Guoxiang Huang

We study linear and nonlinear propagations of probe and signal pulses in a multiple quantum-well structure with a four-level, double Λ-type configuration. We show that slow, mutually matched group velocities and giant Kerr nonlinearity of the probe and the signal pulses may be achieved with nearly vanishing optical absorption. Based on these properties we demonstrate that two-qubit quantum polarization phase gates can be constructed and highly entangled photon pairs may be produced. In addition, we show that coupled slow-light soliton pairs with very low generation power can be realized in the system.

Slow-light solitons in coupled asymmetric quantum wells via interband transitions

Chengjie Zhu, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the formation and propagation of optical solitons in an asymmetric double quantum-well structure. Using a standard method of multiple scales we derive a nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation with some high-order correction terms that describe effects of linear and differential absorption, nonlinear dispersion, delay response of nonlinear refractive index, and third-order dispersion of a probe field. We show that in order to make slowly varying envelope approximation be valid an excitation scheme of interband transition should be adopted. We also show that for realistic quantum-well parameters the probe field with time length of picosecond or shorter must be used to make dispersion and nonlinear lengths of the system be smaller than absorption length, only by which a shape-preserving propagation of optical solitons is available. In addition, we clarify validity domains for the perturbed NLS equation as well as the high-order NLS equation and provide various optical soliton solutions in different regimes both analytically and numerically. We demonstrate that the solitons obtained have ultraslow propagating velocity and can be generated under very low input light intensity.

Subluminal Optical Temporal Solitons in Asymmetric Three Coupled Quantum Wells

S. Shwetanshumala, Swapan Konar

We have explored the possibility of generation and propagation of ultraslow bright optical temporal solitons in asymmetric three-coupled quantum well systems. These bright solitons owe their existence to Kerr and quintic nonlinearities which arise due to a probe pulse and two controlling laser beams. We also find numerically that these solitons are stable against weak perturbation. General Terms Subluminal, Temporal solitons, Coupled quantum wells.

Giant Kerr Nonlinearity for Three-Coupled-Quantum-Well Nanostructures

Ali Raheli

A four level ladder scheme is employed for the realization of slow light large Kerr nonlinear indices in an asymmetric semiconductor three-coupled-quantum-well (TCQW) structure based on intersubband transitions. It is shown that a giant Kerr nonlinearity accompanied with negligible loss can be achieved by properly tuning the intensity of the control fields. A dressed state analysis is given to explain the origin of such a transparency based on slow light enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in this solid medium. In addition, we show that the three-photon detuning plays the important role in enhancing the third-order nonlinearity of the TCQW medium, and may provide new possibilities for technological applications in nonlinear optics and optical switching.

Strongly interacting photons in asymmetric quantum well via resonant tunneling

Hui Sun, Shuangli Fan, Xun‐Li Feng +4 more

We propose an asymmetric quantum well structure to realize strong interaction between two slow optical pulses. The essential idea is the combination of the advantages of inverted-Y type scheme and resonant tunneling. We analytically demonstrate that giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity can be achieved with vanishing absorptions. Owing to resonant tunneling, the contributions of the probe and signal cross-Kerr nonlinearities to total nonlinear phase shift vary from destructive to constrictive, leading to nonlinear phase shift on order of π at low light level. In this structure, the scheme is inherent symmetric for the probe and signal pulses. Consequently, the condition of group velocity matching can be fulfilled with appropriate initial electron distribution.

Strongly interacting and highly entangled photons in asymmetric quantum well with resonant tunneling

Shuangli Fan, Hui Sun, Xun‐Li Feng +4 more

We propose an asymmetric quantum well structure to realize strong interaction between two slow optical pulses. The linear optical properties and nonlinear optical responses associated with cross-Kerr nonlinearity are analyzed. Combining the resonant tunneling and the advantages of inverted-Y type scheme, giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity can be achieved with vanishing absorptions. Based on the unique feature, we demonstrate that highly entangled photons can be produced and photonic controlled phase gate can be constructed. In this construction, the scheme is symmetric for the probe and signal pulses. Consequently, the condition of group velocity matching can be fulfilled by adjusting the initial electron distribution.
