Abstract

We investigate the formation and propagation of optical solitons in an asymmetric double quantum-well structure. Using a standard method of multiple scales we derive a nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation with some high-order correction terms that describe effects of linear and differential absorption, nonlinear dispersion, delay response of nonlinear refractive index, and third-order dispersion of a probe field. We show that in order to make slowly varying envelope approximation be valid an excitation scheme of interband transition should be adopted. We also show that for realistic quantum-well parameters the probe field with time length of picosecond or shorter must be used to make dispersion and nonlinear lengths of the system be smaller than absorption length, only by which a shape-preserving propagation of optical solitons is available. In addition, we clarify validity domains for the perturbed NLS equation as well as the high-order NLS equation and provide various optical soliton solutions in different regimes both analytically and numerically. We demonstrate that the solitons obtained have ultraslow propagating velocity and can be generated under very low input light intensity.

Ultraslow bright and dark solitons in semiconductor quantum wells

Wen‐Xing Yang, Jing-Min Hou, Ray‐Kuang Lee

We study the low-intensity light pulse propagation through an asymmetric double quantum well via Fano-type interference based on intersubband transitions. The propagation of the pulse across the quantum well is studied analytically and numerically with the coupled Maxwell-Schr\"odinger equations. We show the generation of ultraslow bright and dark optical solitons in this system. Whether the solitons are dark and bright can be controlled by the ratio of dipole moments of the intersubband transitions. Such investigation of ultraslow optical solitons in the present work may lead to important applications such as high-fidelity optical delay lines and optical buffers in semiconductor quantum wells structure.

Formation and propagation of coupled ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a cold three-state double- Λ system

Guoxiang Huang, Kaijun Jiang, M. G. Payne +1 more

We investigate the simultaneous formation and propagation of coupled ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a cold, lifetime-broadened three-state double-Lambda atomic system. Starting from the equations of motion of atomic response and two-mode probe-control electromagnetic fields, we derive coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations that govern the nonlinear evolution of the envelopes of the probe fields in this four-wave mixing scheme by means of the standard method of multiple scales. We demonstrate that for weak probe fields and with suitable operation conditions, a pair of coupled optical solitons moving with remarkably slow propagating velocity can be established in such a highly resonant atomic medium. The key elements to such a shape preserving, well matched yet interacting soliton pair is the balance between dispersion effect and self- and cross-phase modulation effects of the system.

Generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and ultraslow optical solitons in a cold four-state atomic system

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang, L. Deng

We investigate the influence of high-order dispersion and nonlinearity on the propagation of ultraslow optical solitons in a lifetime broadened four-state atomic system under a Raman excitation. Using a standard method of multiple-scales we derive a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and show that for realistic physical parameters and at the pulse duration of 10(-6)s, the effects of third-order linear dispersion, nonlinear dispersion, and delay in nonlinear refractive index can be significant and may not be considered as perturbations. We provide exact soliton solutions for the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and demonstrate that optical solitons obtained may still have ultraslow propagating velocity. Numerical simulations on the stability and interaction of these ultraslow optical solitons in the presence of linear and differential absorptions are also presented.

Dynamics of ultraslow optical solitons in a cold three-state atomic system

Guoxiang Huang, L. Deng, M. G. Payne

We present a systematic study on the dynamics of a ultraslow optical soliton in a cold, highly resonant three-state atomic system under Raman excitation. Using a method of multiple scales we derive a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation with high-order corrections that describe effects of linear and differential absorption, nonlinear dispersion, delay response of nonlinear refractive index, diffraction, and third-order dispersion. Taking these effects as perturbations we investigate in detail the evolution of the ultraslow optical soliton using a standard soliton perturbation theory. We show that due to these high-order corrections the ultraslow optical soliton undergoes deformation, change of propagating velocity, and shift of oscillating frequency. In addition, a small radiation superposed by dispersive waves is also generated from the soliton. The results of the present work may provide a guidance that is useful for experimental demonstration of ultraslow optical soliton in cold atomic systems.

GIANT THIRD-ORDER KERR NONLINEARITIES AND SLOW OPTICAL SOLITONS IN DOUBLE QUANTUM-WELL

Xun Xiao

We show the formation of slow optical solitons in the asymmetric coupled double quantum wells (CQW) via a two-photon Raman resonance. With the consideration of real parameters in AlGaAs -based CQW, we indicate the possibility to have cancelation of the linear absorption, giant Kerr nonlinearities, and slow group velocity propagation of the weak probe pulse at the same one-photon detuning frequency around several THz .

Ultraslow optical solitons in tunnel-coupled double semiconductor quantum well

Ai-Xi Chen, Xu Yan-Qiu, Li Deng +1 more

This paper investigates the nonlinear evolution of the pulse probe field in an asymmetric coupled-quantum well driven coherently by a pulse probe field and two controlled fields. This study shows that, by choosing appropriate physical parameters, self-modulation can precisely balance group velocity dispersion in the investigated system, leading to the formation of ultraslow optical solitons of the probe field. The proposed scheme may lead to the development of the controlled technique of optical buffers and optical delay lines.
