Abstract

Using an Indium atomic beam as absorber the resonance fluorescence of the transitions 5d2D3/2 - 5p2P1/2 (λ = 3039 Å) and 6d2D3/2-5p2P 1/2 (λ=2560 Å) was measured as a function of an external magnetic field. In both states two signals were observed at magnetic fields, where three level crossings occur. The observed line shape is discussed for the case of overlapping level crossing components with regard to radiation width and hyperfine structure splitting. The experimental results can be described by the following values for the lifetime τ and the hyperfine structure constants A and B : 5d2D3/2: | A|=(64.5±1.0) Mc/sec·gJ/0.8; B/A = - 0.59±0.17; τ = ( 7.0± 0.4) · 10-9 sec · 0.8/gJ ; 6d2D3/2: | A | =(72.1 ±0.3) Mc/sec·gJ/0.8 ; B/A = - 0.47 ±0.05; τ = (25.5±1 ) ·10-9 sec-0.8/gJ . The values and the sign of the hyperfine structure constants indicate interconfiguration mixing.

Abstract Using separated isotopes the hyperfine structure of the 5p 2P3/2-state in Ag I-spectrum was investigated by scattering the resonance line on an atomic beam in parallel magnetic and electric fields. With the theoretical positive sign of the Stark-constant β, the shift of the Heydenburg- and level-crossing-signals with electric fields can be explained by the following parameters: Ag (107) : A = - (32,4 ± 0.5) Mc/sec , Ag (109): A - - (37,3 ± 0.8) Mc/sec , β (2P3/2) = (5.15 ± 0.15) (kc/sec) (kV/cm) -2 , τ (2p3/2) = (6.3 ± 0.6 ) · 10-9 sec.

Stark-Effekt-Untersuchung der Hyperfeinstruktur des 3 2P3/2-Zustands von Natrium mit der Level-crossing-Methode / Stark-Effect Investigation of the Hyperfine Structure of the 3 2P3/2-State of Sodium by Level-Crossing-Method

D. Zimmermann

Abstract The level-crossing-method has been used for an investigation of the hyperfine structure of the first excited 3 2P3/2-state of sodium applying an additional electric field parallel to the usual mag. netic field. By means of a detailed analysis of the measured change in intensity of the scattered fluorescence light due to the electric field the constant β of the quadratic Stark-effect of the 3 2P3/2-state of sodium was deduced to be β= (10.8± 1.2) kc/s·(kV/cm)2. The experimental result will be discussed with respect to a determination of upper and lower limits for oscillator strengths of transitions between the 3 2P3/2-state and S-states in the sodium spectrum.

P. Zimmermann

Observing the change of the Hanle effect under the influence of a homogeneous electric field E the Stark effect of the (5p1/25d5/2)j=2-state in Sn I was studied. Due to the tensorial part β Jz 2E2 in the Hamiltonian of the second order Stark effect the signal of the zero field crossing (M ∓ 2, M′ = 0 β ≷ 0 ) is shifted to the magnetic field H with gJμBH=2 | β | E2. From these shifts for different electric field strengths the value of the Stark parameter |β| = 0.21(2) MHz/(kV/cm)2 · gJ/1.13 was deduced. A theoretical value of ß using Coulomb wave functions is discussed.

Hyperfine interaction constants and lifetime of the 62D3/2and 62D5/2states of39K measured by the quantum beam method

Małgorzata Głódź, M Krainska-Miszczak

The hyperfine structure and lifetime of the 6 2 D 3/2 and 6 2 D 5/2 states in 39 K are studied experimentally. The states were excited from the ground state by two-photon absorption of the laser light pulses. The hyperfine-structure intervals, and hence the hyperfine-structure interaction constants, were obtained from the numerical analysis of the zero-field quantum beat signals. The unmodulated component of the fluorescence decay curve served to determine the lifetime. In a separate experiment a magnetic field was applied to induce partial decoupling of the electronic and nuclear angular momenta in the 6 2 D states. The sign of the magnetic dipole interaction constants was deduced from the resulting difference between the intensities of sigma + and sigma - polarised fluorescence.

Untersuchung von Level-Crossing-Signalen an schnellen He-Atomen in inhomogenen Magnetfeldern / Investigation of Level-crossing Signals on High-velocity He-atoms in Inhomogeneous Magnetic Fields

Gebhard von Oppen, W. -D. Perschmann

Abstract In level-crossing experiments on high-velocity atoms, the shape of the observed signals depends sensitively on inhomogeneities of the applied magnetic field. With regard to the interpretation of such signals, we investigated the magnetic-field dependence of He I-fluorescence light excited by He-ion-He-atom collisions. Due to the inhomogeneity of the applied magnetic field, the observed level-crossing signals have a distorted shape with an oscillating structure in the wings. Taking into account the motion of the excited atoms, the shape of the signals will be explained.
