Squeezed quantum states in a bistable resonator

Abstract

A quantum solution is suggested for the problem of the evolution of a field in a bistable ring resonator containing a nonlinear medium in which phase self-modulation or parametric amplification take place. A broad class of solutions valid for an arbitrary resonator Q factor is derived. It is shown that the known semiclassical descriptions of quantum state preparation in a resonator are inaccurate and in many cases yield incorrect results. For example, optimal suppression of the quantum fluctuations of one of the quadrature components of the field is achieved not at the lasing threshold but below it.

Quadrature and polarization squeezing in a dispersive optical bistability model

Ferran V. García-Ferrer, Isabel Pérez–Arjona, Germán J. de Valcárcel +1 more

We theoretically study quadrature and polarization squeezing in dispersive optical bistability through a vectorial Kerr cavity model describing a nonlinear cavity filled with an isotropic ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(3)}$ medium in which self-phase- and cross-phase-modulation, as well as four-wave mixing, occur. We derive expressions for the quantum fluctuations of the output field quadratures as a function of which we express the spectrum of fluctuations of the output-field Stokes parameters. We pay particular attention to study how the bifurcations affecting the non-null linearly polarized output mode squeezes the orthogonally polarized vacuum mode, and show how this produces polarization squeezing.

Mutual quantum fluctuations of modes in the case of two-mode parametric oscillation in a resonator

А. В. Белинский

A quantum solution of the problem of two-mode nondegenerate parametric oscillation in a resonator cavity with an arbitrary Q factor is proposed. It is shown that the existing semiclassical analysis is unsatisfactory. If the signal and idler modes are photodetected independently, the noise level in the normalized spectrum of the difference photocurrent is independent of the parametric gain increment. There are optimal Q factors of the resonator for different frequencies in this spectrum.

Squeezing from Raman Scattering in Optical Parametric Oscillators

P. Garcia-Fernandez, Peng Zhou

The squeezing properties of the Raman scattering process which takes place when the lower output frequency from a non-degenerate optical parametric interaction approaches a resonance of the nonlinear medium placed inside an optical resonant cavity are presented. The linear stability analysis is performed and the spectrum for the output fields is given in terms of the quadrature phase components in the Wigner representation. Perfect squeezing for the amplitude difference between the output Stokes and anti-Stokes modes at the Hopf bifurcation point is obtained.

Semiclassical approach to resonance-optics polarization effects in coherent and squeezed fields

Ashat M. Basharov

Equations are derived for the atomic density matrix and relaxation operator for a broadband squeezed field in an arbitrary polarization state and resonance atomic energy levels with an arbitrary degree of degeneracy. It is shown that suppression of the relaxation of the quadrature component of the atomic polarization depends strongly on the type of resonance transition and the polarization state of the squeezed and coherent perturbing fields. When the resonance levels are strongly degenerate, the relaxation of the quadrature component of the atomic polarization under conditions of maximum suppression is nonexponential in character. The mathematical apparatus developed here makes it possible to calculate polarization-related aspects of the multifrequency optical behavior of atomic and molecular systems resonantly excited both by coherent light and by broadband squeezed fields.

Quadrature and polarization squeezing in a vectorial Kerr cavity

Ferran V. García-Ferrer, Isabel Pérez–Arjona, Germán J. de Valcárcel +1 more

Polarization squeezing [1] is attracting much attention in the last few years because of its potential applications in quantum information. We reconsider here the analysis of quantum fluctuations in dispersive optical bistability by generalizing the standard model in order to take into account fluctuations in the two orthogonal polarization components of the intracavity field, and not only in the pumped one as it is customary. In other words, we consider a relatively simple model for a vectorial Kerr cavity: The Kerr nonlinearity is the responsible for dispersive bistability, and two extra nonlinear terms, describing cross-phase modulation and four-wave mixing, couple the intense (pumped) intracavity field (with polarization parallel to that of the field injected in the cavity) with the orthogonally polarized mode. The weight of the new nonlinearities is controlled by the Maker-Terhune coefficients, which verily A + B!2 = 1 for an isotropic material, which we consider. This system exhibits a very rich variety of bifurcations [2], In this communication we describe the simplest results.

Four-photon mixing and squeezed states in a resonator

А. В. Белинский, Anatolii S Chirkin

The problems of eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the modes in a confocal resonator, where counterpropagating four-photon mixing takes place as a result of planar pumping, is solved at the quantum level. It is shown that the quadrature components of the waves generated in such a resonator have different losses and an analytical solution is obtained for these waves. This provides an opportunity to describe correctly the process of formation of squeezed states allowing for the spatial configuration of the waves interacting in such a resonator.
