Mutual quantum fluctuations of modes in the case of two-mode parametric oscillation in a resonator

Abstract

A quantum solution of the problem of two-mode nondegenerate parametric oscillation in a resonator cavity with an arbitrary Q factor is proposed. It is shown that the existing semiclassical analysis is unsatisfactory. If the signal and idler modes are photodetected independently, the noise level in the normalized spectrum of the difference photocurrent is independent of the parametric gain increment. There are optimal Q factors of the resonator for different frequencies in this spectrum.

Quantum analysis of intensity fluctuations in the nondegenerate parametric oscillator

Alistair S. Lane, M. D. Reid, Daniel F. Walls

A quantum analysis of the intensity fluctuations is given for the nondegenerate parametric oscillator both above and below threshold. Theoretical analysis and experiments by Heidmann, Horowicz, Reynaud, Giacobino, and Fabre [Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 2555 (1987)] have shown that a noise suppression below the vacuum level is possible in the difference of the intensities of the signal and idler modes. The effect of nonequal cavity decay rates and intracavity losses is shown to modify significantly the fluctuation spectra for the difference in the intensity of the signal and idler beams. The results of exact nonlinear solutions for the internal cavity modes are discussed. We demonstrate that a very sensitive absorption detector may be made by operating the oscillator near threshold.

Generation of two-mode squeezed states by nondegenerate optical parametric process

Kunchi Peng, Changde Xie, Maoquan Huang +4 more

The full quantum treatment on the three-mode interaction in an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is presented. The simultaneous resonance of three nondegenerate modes in the OPO cavity has been experimentally demonstrated. Reductions in photocurrent noise of 30% relative to the vacuum noise level are obtained for frequency offsets near 2 MHz.

Phase Diffusion and Quantum Noise in the Optical Parametric Oscillator: A Semiclassical Approach

J.-Y. Courtois, A. D. Smith, Claude Fabre +1 more

We calculate by the semiclassical method the noise spectra of a non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold when taking into account two independent diffusion processes on the pump phase and on the signal-idler phase difference. We also show that the phase diffusion processes are important when calculating the quantum noise in an optical parametric oscillator for noise frequencies close to the beat frequency between the signal and idler modes.

Quantum noise reduction in two-photon oscillators

Paulo A. Maia Neto, L. Davidovich

We present an exact nonlinear derivation of the spectrum of fluctuations in the difference of output intensities for the signal and idler beams generated by intracavity two-photon gain, when the cavity decay rates are the same for the two modes, and taking into account the atomic fluctuations. For the field inside the cavity, we show that the variance in the difference of intensities may be up to 50% below the shot-noise value. We also consider the case of different decay rates, and show that the noise in the output-intensity difference vanishes at zero frequency, for single-ported cavities, and as long as the only source of field decay is the transmission through the mirror. Within this general approach, we show that for the two-photon laser there is a strong correlation between signal and idler output beams when the relay-level detuning is larger than the power broadening. We calculate, in lowest order, the correction to the noise spectrum of the difference of intensities due to the population of the relay level.

Two-color continuous-variable quantum entanglement in a singly resonant optical parametric oscillator

Domenico Cuozzo, Gian‐Luca Oppo

We apply the input-output theory of optical cavities to formulate a quantum treatment of a continuous-wave singly resonant optical parametric oscillator. This case is mainly relevant to highly nondegenerate signal and idler modes. We show that both intensity and quadrature squeezing are present and that the maximum noise reduction below the standard quantum limit is the same at the signal and idler frequencies as in the doubly resonant case. As the threshold of oscillation is approached, however, the intensity-difference and quadrature spectra display a progressive line narrowing which is absent in the balanced doubly resonant case. By use of the separability criterion for continuous variables, the signal-idler state is found to be entangled over wide ranges of the parameters. We show that attainable levels of squeezing and entanglement make singly resonant configurations ideal candidates for two-color quantum information processes, because of their ease of tuning in experimental realizations.

Generation and amplification of number states by nondegenerate parametric oscillators with idler-measurement feedback

Gunnar G. Bjork, Y. Yamamoto

Noise spectra of the in-phase and quadrature-phase components of the signal and idler fields of a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier are calculated. It is shown that, as is suggested by the operator Manley-Rowe relations, the external in-phase (amplitude) fluctuations of the signal and idler fields are correlated in the frequency region lower than the signal and idler cavity bandwidths. If the idler photon flux is continuously measured and the photocurrent fluctuations are fed back to control the pump intensity, the signal output will feature an amplitude noise spectral density reduced to below the standard quantum limit (amplitude squeezing) in the frequency region below the feedback loop and signal and idler cavity bandwidths. An all-optical realization of such a negative-feedback parametric oscillator is presented. It is also shown that a nondegenerate parametric amplifier with idler measurement feedback can add a fixed number of photons to a photon-number state.
