Abstract

Particle-hole-magnetic and particle-particle-pairing susceptibilities can be expressed in terms of dressed Green's functions and interaction vertices. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulation techniques, the effect of the interaction vertices is examined to determine the sign and relative magnitude of the effective pairing interaction in various channels for the two-dimensional Hubbard model. Near half filling we find that the singlet ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ pairing interaction is the most attractive. The extended near-neighbor $s$ interaction is also weakly attractive, while the singlet ${s}_{\mathrm{xy}}$ and ${d}_{\mathrm{xy}}$ and the triplet ${p}_{x}$ interactions are repulsive.

Pairing interaction in the two-dimensional Hubbard model studied with a dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation

Thomas Maier, Mark Jarrell, Douglas J. Scalapino

A dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation is used to study the effective pairing interaction of a two-dimensional Hubbard model with a near neighbor hopping $t$ and an onsite Coulomb interaction $U$. The effective pairing interaction is characterized in terms of the momentum and frequency dependence of the eigenfunction of the leading eigenvalue of the irreducible particle-particle vertex. The momentum dependence of this eigenfunction is found to vary as $(\mathrm{cos}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{k}_{x}--\mathrm{cos}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{k}_{y})$ over most of the Brillouin zone and its frequency dependence is determined by the $S=1$ particle-hole continuum which for large $U$ varies as several times $J$. This implies that the effective pairing interaction is attractive for singlets formed between near-neighbor sites and retarded on a time scale set by ${(2J)}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The strength of the pairing interaction measured by the size of the $d$-wave eigenvalue peaks for $U$ of order of the bandwidth $8t$. It is found to increase as the system is underdoped.

Spin-triplet pairing instability in a two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model

X. Liu, Yu-Feng Song, Yuan-Yao He +2 more

The search for superconductivity with unconventional pairing symmetry has been a central focus in the study of strongly correlated electron systems. In this work, we report a numerically exact study of the spin-triplet pairing in a two-dimensional Hubbard model with repulsive interactions, employing the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. The model includes next-nearest-neighbor and third-nearest-neighbor hopping terms and maintains spin balance. By tuning the fermion filling close to a type-II Van Hove singularity (VHS) in the model, we numerically investigate the ordering tendencies of several possible pairing channels with different symmetries. Our numerical results provide clear evidence of the spin-triplet $p$-wave pairing instability approaching low temperatures, as revealed by the vertex contribution to the pairing susceptibility. This signature becomes increasingly pronounced as the interaction strength increases in the weak to intermediate regime. We further find that, near the type-II VHS, the dominant spin-spin correlations in the system are ferromagnetic, suggesting its close relation to the spin-triplet pairing instability. Our findings offer a reliable approach to realize spin-triplet $p$-wave superfluidity in the repulsive Hubbard model from an unbiased numerical perspective.

The Pairing Interaction in the 2D Hubbard Model

Thomas Maier, Mark Jarrell, Douglas J. Scalapino

A dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation is used to study the effective pairing interaction of a 2D Hubbard model with a near neighbor hopping $t$ and an on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ . The effective pairing interaction is characterized in terms of the momentum and frequency dependence of the eigenfunction of the leading eigenvalue of the irreducible particle-particle vertex. The momentum dependence of this eigenfunction is found to vary as $(\cos k_x-\cos k_y)$ over most of the Brillouin zone and its frequency dependence is determined by the exchange energy $J$. This implies that the effective pairing interaction is attractive for singlets formed between near-neighbor sites and retarded on a time scale set by $J^{-1}$. The strength of the pairing interaction measured by the size of the d-wave eigenvalue peaks for $U$ of order the bandwidth $8t$. It is found to increase as the system is underdoped.

Sign change of the extended s -wave pairing vertex in the dynamic Hubbard model: A quantum Monte Carlo study

Karim Bouadim, Matthew Enjalran, F. Hébert +2 more

The ``dynamic'' Hubbard Hamiltonian describes interacting fermions on a lattice whose on-site repulsion is modulated by a coupling to a fluctuating bosonic field. We investigate one such model, introduced by Hirsch, using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Our key result is that the extended $s$-wave pairing vertex, repulsive in the usual static Hubbard model, becomes attractive as the coupling to the fluctuating Bose field increases. The sign problem prevents us from exploring a low enough temperature to see if a superconducting transition occurs. We also observe a stabilization of antiferromagnetic correlations and the Mott gap near half-filling, and a near linear behavior of the energy as a function of particle density which indicates a tendency toward phase separation.

Quantum Monte-Carlo simulation study of attractive Hubbard chain

M.S. Khurana, Kamlesh Kumari, Ishwar S Singh

Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations of one-dimensional narrow band systems with attractive interactions (U < 0) have been reported. Using Hubbard model, local squared magnetic moments, probability of double occupancy, spin magnetic susceptibility and various spin pairing correlation functions as a function of Coulomb interactions for different band fillings have been studied.

The "W=0" Pairing Mechanism from Repulsive Interactions in Symmetric 2d Models

Michele Cini, Gianluca Stefanucci

In two-dimensional systems possessing a high degree of symmetry, the repulsive electron-electron interaction produces a pairing force; the mechanism would fail in the presence of strong distortions. We have studied this in the one-band and three-band Hubbard Model. From partially occupied orbitals one obtains pair eigenstates of the Hamiltonian with no on-site repulsion (the W=0 pairs). The concept of W=0 pairs allows to make qualitative and quantitative predictions about the behaviour of interacting many-body systems, a quite remarkable and unusual situation. Exact numerical solutions for clusters with ``magic'' hole numbers reveal attraction between the holes in W=0 pairs. The effect occurs in all fully symmetric clusters which are centered on a Cu site; then holes get paired in a wide, physically relevant parameter range and show superconducting quantization of the magnetic flux. A canonical transformation of the Hamiltonian, valid for clusters and for the full plane, leads to a Cooper-like equation for the W=0 pairs. We have evaluated the effective interaction and found that W=0 pairs are the bare quasiparticles which, once dressed, become two-hole bound states. We applied the above theory to the doped antiferromagnet, and found that the ground state at half filling is the singlet component of a determinantal state. We write down this determinant and the ground state wave function explicitly in terms of a many-body W=0 eigenstate. Our analytical results for the $4\times 4$ square lattice at half filling and with doped holes, compared to available numerical data, demonstrate that the method, besides providing intuitive grasp on pairing, also has quantitative predictive power.
