Gain in Phase Sensitive Parametric Image Amplification

Abstract

We report an experiment of type 2 parametric image amplification in a phase sensitive configuration. In the spatial frequency domain, the parametric gain corresponds to amplification or deamplification, depending on the relative phase of the input image with respect to the pump wave and on the spatial frequencies of the input image.

Noiseless Optical Amplification of Images

Sang-Kyung Choi, Michael Vasilyev, Prem Kumar

We used a spatially broadband optical parametric amplifier for image amplification. In the phase-sensitive configuration of the amplifier, we observed noiseless amplification of input images. For a gain of $\ensuremath{\simeq}2.5$, we measured noise-figure values of ( $0.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6$) and ( $0.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5$) dB, respectively, for two amplifiers of different lengths. These experimental values agree with theory (for an ideal noiseless amplifier the noise figure is 0 dB) and are almost 2 dB lower than the quantum limit of an ideal phase-insensitive amplifier.

Numerical studies of multimodal phase-sensitive parametric amplification

Igor Jovanovic, D. French, Joshua C. Walter +1 more

In the presence of a nonzero idler beam or, equivalently, in the collinear degenerate configuration, optical parametric amplification (OPA) can be phase sensitive. When the photon deamplification mode is selected in the OPA process, amplification of the optical phase occurs instead of the usual amplification of photon number. We demonstrate for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that the operation of a spatially multimodal optical parametric amplifier in the phase-sensitive mode can result in a significant redistribution of spatial frequencies and near-ideal beam angle amplification. A numerical model is presented for phase-sensitive parametric amplification via three-wave mixing. The model is applied to monochromatic beams and finite beam apertures. The sensitivity of gain to the incident phase, noncollinear angle, and aperture size is studied in particular. Simple conditions are derived for the operation of the optical parametric amplifier in the phase-sensitive mode. Potential applications of the concept are discussed.

Observation of Noiseless Image Amplification by an Optical Parametric Amplifier

Sang-Kyung Choi, Michael Vasilyev, Prem Kumar

A spatially-broadband optical parametric amplifier is used for image amplification. In the phase-sensitive configuration, we observe a noise figure of −0.1± 0.3dB for a gain of 2.4, which is 2dB lower than the quantum limit for an ideal phase-insensitive amplifier. Image pre-amplification before loss is shown to improve the detected signal-to-noise ratio.

Traveling-wave optical parametric amplifier: investigation of its phase-sensitive and phase-insensitive gain response

Sang-Kyung Choi, Ruo-Ding Li, Chonghoon Kim +1 more

We experimentally investigate the gain response of a frequency-degenerate but polarization-nondegenerate traveling-wave optical parametric amplifier that consists of a type II phase-matched potassium titanyl phosphate crystal pumped by a frequency-doubled Q-switched mode-locked Nd:YAG laser. Both the optical phase-sensitive and phase-insensitive configurations of the parametric amplifier are studied. Experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theory of an optical parametric amplifier when the Gaussian-beam nature of the various fields is taken into account. In the phase-sensitive configuration a gain of >100 (20 dB) could be easily obtained in the amplified quadrature, which is limited only by the available pump power. Because of gain-induced diffraction and phase fluctuations, however, maximum deamplification in the orthogonal quadrature is limited to <0.5(-3 dB).

Quantum Image Generation by c.w. Optical Parametric Amplification

L. Lopez, Nicolas Treps, Claude Fabre +1 more

In this paper, experimental evidence of cw amplification of images in the quantum regime, using a phase sensitive optical parametric amplification operating inside transverse degenerate cavities. Injecting various images (mismatched Gaussian modes and double slits of different orientations) at the input of the device, showed that the output image was amplitude squeezed by 30% in the regime of deamplification of a type II frequency-degenerate OPO operating below threshold in a semi-confocal cavity, when the polarization of the input image is at 45deg from the crystal axes. The authors showed also that, in the regime of amplification, the two polarization components along the signal and idler axes had quantum correlated intensity fluctuations (intensity difference fluctuations measured at 30% below the standard quantum noise level).
