Optical switching and inversionless amplification controlled by state-dependent alignment of molecules

A. K. Popov, Vitaliy V. Slabko

Switching anisotropic molecules from strongly-absorbing to strongly-amplifying through a transparent state is shown to be possible by application of dc or ac control electric fields without the requirement of the population inversion. It is based on decoupling of the lower-level molecules from the resonant light while the excited ones remain emitting due to their state-dependent alignment. The amplification index may become dependent only on a number of excited molecules and not on the population of the lower state. A suitable class of molecules and applications in optoelectronics, fiberoptics and nanophotonics are outlined.

Coherence-controlled optical switching and amplification without inversion in a strongly-absorbing inhomogeneously-broadened medium

A. K. Popov, S. A. Myslivets, Thomas F. George

A sample, opaque at an inhomogeneously-broadened transition, can be made transparent or even strongly amplifying without inversion by two control lower-frequency lasers. Applications for frequency-tunable filtering, photon switching and amplification in Raman schemes are discussed.

Amplification without population inversion and enhancement of refractive index with zero absorption using two-photon pumping

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, E N Minakova

The simple model is proposed for amplification of a probe optical radiation without population inversion and enhancement of refractive index at a point of vanishing absorption when a strong driving field is present at the adjacent two-photon transition. The conditions for observation of the effects have been determined.
