Abstract

We have experimentally studied the propagation behaviors of light pulses in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium. Both phase variation in different parts of a pulse and distortion of the pulse shape are observed. The consistency between the experimental data and theoretical predictions is satisfactory. Our study explains the physical origins of the phase variation and the shape distortion, shows that the phase variation should be taken into consideration in applications utilizing the EIT scheme in which two-photon detuning must exist, and provides better understanding of the propagation behavior of the slow light.

Dynamical control of pulse propagation in electromagnetically induced transparency

Martin Kiffner, Tarak Nath Dey

The influence of a phase-modulated control field on the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is investigated theoretically. We show that the phase modulation changes the dispersive properties of the medium considerably since it results in temporal oscillations of the transparency window in frequency space. This is in marked contrast to the standard EIT setup, where the transparency window is fixed and determined by the two-photon resonance condition. In particular, we find that the phase modulation enables the propagation of probe pulses with disjoint frequency spectra at different times and allows the shifting of the central frequency of a probe pulse almost without distortion of its shape. We employ the time-dependent susceptibility of the medium to explain and analyze our results and demonstrate that this concept yields qualitative as well as quantitative agreement with the numerical integration of Maxwell-Bloch equations. Our theoretical model can be applied to other media with time-dependent susceptibilities.

Time delay and broadening of six isolated pulses are studied and experimentally demonstrated in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) slow light medium. The optimal pulse for largest delay (smallest broadening) is amplitude-shaped by Single-Exponential (Cosine).

Slow light of an amplitude modulated Gaussian pulse in electromagnetically induced transparency medium

Wenzhuo Tang, Bin Luo, Yu Liu +1 more

The slow light effects of an amplitude modulated Gaussian (AMG) pulse in a cesium atomic vapor are presented. In a single-$Λ$ type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium, more severe distortion is observed for an AMG pulse than a Gaussian one. Using Fourier spectrum analysis, we find that the distortion, as well as the loss, is dominantly caused by linear absorption than dispersion. Accordingly, a compensation method is proposed to reshape the slow light pulse based on the transmission spectrum. In addition, we find a novel way to obtain simultaneous slow and fast light.

Slow-light dynamics from electromagnetically-induced-transparency spectra

We show how slow-light pulse delays in realistic electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) media can be determined directly from static transmission spectra. Using only the measured EIT linewidth and off-resonant transmission, the absolute delay of a slow-light pulse in an optically thick, power-broadened medium can be simply and accurately determined, while capturing more complex optical pumping behavior.

Propagation of short pulses through a Bose-Einstein condensate

Devrim Tarhan, Seçkin Şefi, Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu

We study propagation of short laser pulses in a Bose-Einstein condensate taking into account dispersive effects under the conditions for electromagnetically induced transparency. We calculate dispersion coefficients using typical experimental parameters of slow-light schemes in condensates. By numerically propagating the laser pulse, and referring to theoretical estimations, we determine the conditions for which dispersion starts to introduce distortions on the pulse shape.
