Inversion-polariton Filamentation in Laser Media

Abstract

The formation of a filamentary structure of inversion polariton excitations in a system of two-level atoms is treated as a non-equilibrium phase transition. The order parameter corresponding to this transition is defined in relation to the characteristic of pumping. It is shown that stationary stimulated super-radiance is possible.

Inversion-polarization Filaments under Weak Pumping

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov

It is shown that inversion-polarization filaments in laser media arise not only under strong but also under weak pumping. In the system with these filaments a coherent component of radiation appears, while a uniform system could radiate only incoherently. The coherent radiation is sharply anisotropic and is strongest in the direction of the filaments. Notwithstanding the weakness of pumping, in the system with inversion-polariton filaments a super-radiating regime is possible.

Lasing and phase transition in atomic system with dressed states

Igor Yu. Chestnov, A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan

The problem of phase transitions in the system of high-density gas of two-level atoms non-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity is studied. The OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition we analyze the problem of thermodynamic equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of the atomic DS thermalization process. At the same time such a transition can be connected with condensed (coherent) properties of low branch DS-polaritons occurring in the cavity. Various aspects of non-equilibrium phase transition to laser field generation by using atomic DS levels are studied in detail. It is important that for positive atom-light detuning DS lasing can be obtained in the presence of quasi-equilibrium DS population that corresponds to a true two-level atomic system with inversion in perturbative limit.

Lasing and high-temperature phase transitions in atomic systems with dressed-state polaritons

Igor Yu. Chestnov, A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan

We consider the fundamental problem of high-temperature phase transitions in the system of high-density two-level atoms off-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity. OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed-state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition, we analyze the problem of a thermodynamically equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing a real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of the atomic DSs thermalization process. Such a transition is also connected with condensed (coherent) properties of low branch DS polaritons occurring in the cavity. For describing nonequilibrium phase transitions we derive Maxwell-Bloch--like equations which account for cavity decay rate, collisional decay rate, and spontaneous emission. Various aspects of transitions to laser field formation by using atomic DS levels for both positive and negative detuning of a pump field from atomic transition frequency are studied in detail. It is revealed that for positive atom-light detuning DS lasing can be obtained in the presence of quasiequilibrium DS population that corresponds to a true two-level atomic system with the inversion in a nonresonant limit.

Formation of inversion filaments in laser media due to interatomic interactions via the superradiation field

Vladimir I Emel'yanov, Vyacheslav I. Yukalov

It was theoretically shown that on taking into account interaction between atoms via the superradiation field, an inverted medium of two-level atoms becomes unstable, which leads to constriction of the inversion density into filaments randomly arranged with respect to the beam cross section. The estimates obtained are in good agreement with experiment.

Generation of Raman polaritons in three-level atomic media

Igor O. Barinov, Alexei V. Prokhorov, A. P. Alodjants +1 more

A theory of formation of Stokes field (Raman) polaritons, which arise due to the coherent stimulated Raman scattering of light in an ensemble of three-level atoms placed in a Fabry-Perot cavity in the case of a strong coupling regime, is developed. The dispersion and absorption properties of Raman polaritons are investigated and the conditions for polariton amplification are found. It is shown that for certain pump power values, nonclassical correlations (entanglement) between light and dark polaritons are observed in the system.

Intracavity laser pumping of matter and phase transitions in the system of electromagnetic field and optically dense resonant medium without population inversion

Valentin Averchenko, A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan +5 more

Under conditions of intracavity laser pumping of the absorbing cell the possibility of high-temperature BEC-like phase transitions in polariton assemble is shown. It manifests in spectral features of the field-matter-cavity system and results in the "spectrum" condensation.
